Last week our whole family (me, my hubby, and our three kids) had a stomach bug, in varying degrees. We're all over it completely though, but our 3 yr. old son Judah just continues to be sick, over and over again. He has been vomiting and having diarrhea intermittently for eight days now. He went to the pediatrician on Thursday and he was somewhat dehydrated; and his dr. said that if he vomited anymore that day, to take him to the hospital. Well, he didn't, and he seemed to be getting better, but then "relapsed" (for lack of a better word) the next morning. Then Saturday he was fine. Then this morning (Sunday) he started all over again, throwing up, not keeping anything down, having the watery diarrhea again. It's like he's stuck in a never-ending cycle of sickness. He has barely eaten much over the past week and he's definitely showing signs of malaise, not wanting to play as much, clinging to me, etc. (He's usually very active; he's a 3 yr. old boy!) Today on recommendation from his pediatrician we took him to the ER, and they gave him Zofran which did seem to perk him up and help him feel better, and they ran bloodwork to see if there were any abnormalities. He did have one test come back abnormal that they said could possibly indicate a bacterial infection, but that they need a stool sample (gross, I know) to know for sure. Problem is, I can't get one b/c his stool is so runny it soaks right into the Pull-Up! (I apologize for being gross again--but I have to also add that, we all know that poo stinks, but right now, his stinks in a way I have NEVER smelled before, like turn-your-stomach, get-out-the-bleach-and-Febreze kind of odor.....I imagine it's indicative of infection.) Anyway I wonder if any of you have had this happen to your child or know someone that has, and what it turned out to be. We are mystified. Can a stomach virus (perhaps rotavirus?) really last THIS long?? We feel so bad for our son. We've given him Pedialyte, popsicles, applesauce, juice, you name it, to help him get better. We're so frustrated and tired! Any ideas?
