My 13 month old daughter absolutely hates having her hair washed. She freaks out every time. I have tired a wash cloth, cup of water, and a partial dunk. She gets so up set and wants to get out of the tub. HELP! When she was smaller she has always been partially dunked to clean her hair. Then all of a sudden she hates it. How can I still manage to wash her hair with out fear, or help her to adjust???

Thanks ladies! I like the idea of distracting her with something stuck on the ceiling. I try to get her to look up now, and she will for a second. As soon as the water hits her head she tenses up and begins to cry, then immediately tries to climb out of the tub or cling to me to get her out. Even if I mention the words time to wash your hair, she shakes her head no and starts to fuss. I don't know what happened, She has never been afraid of the water, and I have always gotten her face wet in the tub. Also I was wondering if anyone has ever used a baby doll in the tub? She is into them now, and I thought maybe she could wash the doll while I wash her...maybe then she won't focus so much attention on what I am doing???? I always use my hand to block the water, but she just pulls away. Thanks ladies for your great advice! Wish us luck!!!

yeah...I tell her to look up and put my hand at her hairline as well. Works well. Now she just gets annoyed that she has to sit still.

if you have a shower head that you can take down to her and show her it's "raining on her" might help?! my son loves that and hates getting his hair rinsed off.

my 17 month old was the same way. i dunno if this will work for you, it only started working for me about 2 weeks ago and i've been saying the same thing all her life, but i tell Lexi to look at the ceiling. i keep reminding her so that she doesn't look down when the water pours over her head and i tell her that as long as she does that, water won't get on her face. i also put the hand not holding the cup at her hairline to stop most of the water. she still tenses up some but compared to the crying fits she used to have, i will take it. i want to get some kind of decals, like fish or ducks or something so i can have her focus on them and talk about them while i rinse her hair so it distracts her completely.

We have a detachable shower head for my kiddo since her hair is now so thick that a cup just doesn't cut it. Whatever you choose, try to make it into a game. I had her help hold the shower head with me and spray parts of the tub before finally using it on her head. This helped her get used to the noise and not get too freaked out. I'm not sure if this helps, but whatever you try, stick with it for a few weeks. It may just be a phase that stops as quickly as it started.
