How do I get my 2 1/2 year old to sleep past 5 AM.

My 2 1/2 year old son goes to bed around 7:30-8:00. He used to sleep until I had to wake him to go to daycare at 6:15. Now he has been waking up around 5 AM for the past 2-3 weeks. He naps for about 2 hours around 12:00. He seems tired by mid morning but I can't get him to sleep later than about 5:30 or so. He shares a room with his 10 month old brother and he ends up waking him up early so now I have 2 cranky children. I've tried the alarm clock with music in the morning but he's always up before then. I do live in AZ and we don't have daylight savings time. He wakes up with the sun and tells me "mommy, Sun up." Any suggestions?

maybe it is possible that he is hungry and he is waking up because of that int he morning? if thats the case, maybe a nice hearty snack before bed would help him sleep later.

I dont have this problem, my daughter sleeps 10-12 hours every night regardless when she is put down. But we do have the blackout curtains on the windows, and she gets a good filling bedtime snack before she goes to bed.

i hope you figure something out!

we have a blanket hung under the curtains to make it darker in our daughters room. but when she wakes up depends on when i laid her down. if i lay her down at 9pm she will wake up around 7, but if i lay her down at 10pm she will sleep until 8-9.

Oh so i am not alone, it's 5 Am here in Vancouver now and he'll be up any minute surprised he isn't already . I get up at 4 am on the weekdays for work , but even on the weekends he never ever sleeps past 6 am. No matter when I put him to bed he gets up at the same time, one day we will all get to sleep in until then, I am due for a coffee re-fill.

I feel ya! My 3 year old twin boys wake up early no matter what time I put them to bed. They've gone to be at 9pm and they STILL get up early! LOL

I like Stacie's idea, maybe try darkening the room? (I'm going to try that myself this weekend)

FWIW, I have an older daughter that would wake up at the crack of dawn at that age. She's now 7 and sleeps in! So, maybe we just have to wait a few more years LOL

Hi
How I wished I knew the answer to that one, lol!! I am in the same position, my daughter is awake and raring to go at around 0430 everyday, I tried putting her to bed slightly later but oh no, she still loves that time of the day so I have gone back to putting her to bed at her usual time. I have put blackout blinds at the window but still no luck, I swear these early mornings are killing me, lol!! Good luck x

Have you tried to darken the room a little more? I live in Hawaii so the sun doesn't come up as early but I clipped darker sheets to the curtains in my son's room since the curtain was an off-white color. It keeps the room on the darker side and it helps my son (he's 3) sleep in until at least 6:30-7:00...and if I'm lucky, sometimes a little later. But I also had a neighbor who had the same problem as you....they'd put their son down at about the same time and he'd wake up at 5am every morning. At that time he was around the same age. It could just be a phase....cross your fingers. But good luck!
