have you tried sign language with your child? we used sign language with our son until he started to talk. we didn't use it for potty training, but you can. kids definitely can communicate, even if they cannot say words. it really cut down on our frustration with figuring out if he's hungry, etc.
anyway, i think the book is a very good "middle road" sort of text, without being too "just let the kid decide" nor too "start sitting your baby on the potty before 6 months".

Quoting Juanita:
there is a book "diaper free before 3" by Jill Lekovic. She gives a lot of good information about potty training in other cultures, potty training in the US before Brazelton, and how to start at an earlier age.
If you start early, it's very casual and gradual, more about introducing the idea of going potty. It is not dependent on verbal skills, but more about picking one or two times a days that it is usual to pee (before baths, after waking up) and getting your child accustomed to sitting on the potty. It's very no pressure, but with early introduction, the idea is that there is less resistance as the child gets older and has more sit times.
I read this book and thought it was interesting. I picked up some good ideas and my son trained at about 33months. I am very laid back and didn't really care, let him run the show, though. I loaned the book too a friend who's son has medical issues that were keeping him from being trained (at 3 1/2) and she found it helpful.

Your child will let you know when they're ready. My son is 3 and still isn't ready. Sometimes he goes other times he doesn't so I know he's not quite ready. I wouldn't rush it b/c your child will just regress against doing it even more

I'm not even going there until my son is about 2 years old and has the verbal skills to tell me when he needs to go potty. I'm in no rush whatsoever. They grow up fast enough as it is and changing diapers is no big deal as far as I'm concerned.

i thought it was upto the child to let you know when they're ready... they havwe to recognise that they need the toilet before they can be potty train or at least tahts what i have been told Alannah is only 11 months old and i've not thought about it to be honest she's not aware of her nappies being dirty yet but when she is i shall start asking her about her nappies till she knows when shes needing to go...sorry couldn't be much more help :S
-thanks so much debbie=) maybe you're right..she has to be ready first & that she has to recognize if her nappy needs to be changed already or that if she needs to go..thanks a lot for sharing your thought! =)
