I have five grown children. My eldest is 26 and my youngest is 17. I work at a High School. Yesterday I had a conversation with a teacher who teaches childcare. She told me that babies can walk by 6 months and are well and truly walking by 10 months. This concerned me as all of my children walked around 11 months or 12 months. I wondered if she was correct as I presume this is what she is teaching the students. This teacher has no children of her own.

every child is different and i wouldn't take advice from a teacher. I'd talk to a doctor. Yes, my son walked at 10 months exactly but I have friends that have children that either haven't walked and they are a year and some that walked earlier than 10 months. She's just a teacher and doesn't work with children. She's only text book knowledgeable.

My fourth boy took his first unassisted steps in the last few days of his fifth month. He was fully walking on his own all the time in the sixth month. He was a pretty grumpy little guy until he started walking. Took him to a doc and he said it was the earliest he'd seen but it was fine. Got a lot of people telling me it was bad for him. Like I could or should have prevented him from walking when he did. He ended up having some pretty big speech delays, I think some kids are quicker at some things and others at others. And when the brain is advanced in one area sometimes it is slower to advance in others. They are all so different and amazing.

all children are different my eldest was walkin confidently at 14 mths n my middle one at 10 mths but my youngest is only just getting her confidence now at 18mths....so i really think they should be teachin relevent info cos that sort of statement can really worry a mother who may not be aware of the ways things really are....!

9-18 months is 'normal'. Some can be a little bit earlier or a bit later and it's still fine. 'Average' tends to be around 13 months.

Some people's idea of walking and my idea of walking are much different. Taking steps while holding onto moms hands does not constitute as walking in my book. For my girls walking is taking steps on their own and when they fall down, being able to get up on their own. My first was about 14 months old, and my second was 10 months and running!

I have a friend who's son is 6 months old and he's walking, with help and it's only a few steps, but it is very much possible.

My daughter took her first steps around 10 1/2 to 11 months old when she too her first steps and is now 17 1/2 months old is walking very well! All kids are different and not all kids walk at 6months and it isn't bad if your child doesn't walk at 6 months either. The way I see it they will walk when they are ready! They have to comfortable to do it. Some get lucky and their child walks early but that doesn't make the other children that don't any less smarter or less advanced.

I think some people have different fews on walking. Some people take standing and falling down as walking. I count walking from one point to another without falling down, and my kids did this at 11 and 10mths. Yes they were walking around furniture along time before that, but not unassisted.

No disrespect to the child care teacher, but she needs to do some more training. My brother walked at 7 months and the paediatrician said it was incredibly early and that he had amazing muscle tone.My 2 girls walked between 14 and 16 months and this was considered late but within normal. All children are built different and as long as there is no medical problems holding them back from walking there probably is nothing to worry about.

My dad walked at 6 months. I truly believe that it is up to the child. Every child is different.

My youngest started walking at 6 months so it is possible, however it scared me to death because she could walk but she didn't have the depth perception down yet to tell how far away things were.

i walked at 6-1/2 months, and my husband did at 6 months, but my son is 11 months and not walking yet. the docs at a children's hospital in Louisville KY said normal earliest is 8 months, and anything earlier is possible but very rare. and normal latest is somewhere around 18 months old.

Babies walk when they decide to walk. They also crawl when they decide to crawl. Alot of moms worry that their children aren't developing quickly enough because of what they hear or what other babies are doing. My little man didn't start crawling until he was 9 months old and he was walking less than 2 weeks later. They do things when they are ready.

My daughter was just starting to crawl by then if not a little while later. She had some health issues early on so she was a little farther behind then most, but didn't actually start standing until probably close to 13 months and didn't actually start walking until 15 months.

There is no way a baby can walk by six months the bones have to be strong and mature enough to support their bodies.. A baby can sit comfortable unaided by six months and therafter start crawling. This is the normal development progress of a baby. My son started walking on his own by 11 months although I heard most girls mature faster than boys

Also my dr. told me the bones in a baby's vertabrae are not properly formed till about 9months so that is why they don't expect all children to walk by thier 1st birthday...

my son was cruising at 8 months but didn't fully walk till 14 months... I have never heard of a 6 month old walking before and that is with bragging moms :P The earliest I ever heard was 8 months as well. I wonder if she just meant she knew of a kid who walked that early?

I have 4 children and all of mine were walking before 9 months. My youngest started walking with no problems by time she was 6 months. My other 3 were at 7 and 8 months..
With our youngest child I handed her dad some pumpkin pie and she wanted some.. so off she went.. not holding onto anything.

Maybe by walking at 6mo she is talking about when they pull up on furniture. Some kids get around that way really well. I always considered walking as unassisted. My son (17) walked around 1yr. My daughter 2yrs walked at 9.5mo. It is different for every child, but 6mo sounds really young.

my husband was born 7 months making him around 2 months premature and he was walking at 8 months, I was 10.5 months and my daughter was 11 months which is still early because the normal age for walking is 13-15 months with some babies not walking until 18+ months. Your children are concider early walkers some babies are just earlier

no that is not true! all babies walk in there own time and should only be concerned if not walking by 18 mnths! babies usually walk anywhere frm 9 mnths up, my eldest was walkin frm 13 mnths and crawling at 7 mnths! i have heard of one case in the uk of a baby walking at 6mnths as they simply havent got the strength or balance to do it! 6 mnths they normally sit up! where did she get her information?! it would be interesting to know! lol!

I agree, it's possible but probably somewhat rare. My daughter was walking on her own at 8 1/2 months (she started cruising at 6 months), which a lot of people say is super early.

my oldest was walking at 10 months and my 20month old was walking at 11 1/2 months. my yougest didn't crawl untill about 9 1/2 months (he would combat crawl) he started that at 6 months. my oldest started crawling at 6 months as well. Baby can't walk at 6months their legs aren't strong enough to hold their weight. The walking age are from 10 to 18 months ( thats what my boys doctor told me)

I suppose it's possible but highly unlikely. Crawling by 6 mths yeah. Both my kids were kind of early walkers-10 mths. I would say she's giving students false info.

I'm sure it's possible at 6 months if the baby is being worked with constantly and has good balance by then. But, in my experience, I've NEVER seen a baby walk at 6 months. My baby crawled at 4 months, stood up for a few seconds by himself at 9 months, and was walking by himself at right about his 1 year birthday. Again, I'm sure it's POSSIBLE... just not the normal time frame. Since she doesn't have children of her own, I guess she only goes by what she reads in some book, right? Books aren't always right. Neither are surveys, polls.. and a lot of people like to tell people they know things that they just really have no idea about. I knew a girl that told me her baby walked at 6-7 months.. I visited her when the baby was 10 months and she wasn't even trying to stand up. People are silly :)

The earliest I have seen a baby walk was 9 months. 6 months is impossible. Ususally babies try to crawl at this age.

I have 3 boys. My first son didn't walk until he was 17 months, my second was 13 months. My 3rd son age 10 months just started crawling. All kids are different. If she is teaching that a lot of parents are going to think somethings wrong with their kids when they don't start walking. 9 months is considered early walking around here.

Babies can start walking at 6 months. My sister was 5 months 3 weeks old when she started walking by herself but for her to teach students that it will make future mothers/father worried. The avg. is between 10 and 15 months for most babies. I was walking at 10 months and my daughter was walking 1 week before her first birthday.

I hope she doesn't teach students such a wrong idea. it will confuse the future moms. My daughter stood after 6 months and started walking soon after. She walked well by 10 months but she was on early side. Lots of them start walking around 1 year old or after. I would tell the teacher most nappies sold at the shops show crawler size 5-10kg, toddler 10-15kg. 6 month old couldn't weigh 10kg (generally speaking).

Two of my children were walking around things by 5 months and one walking on her own by 8 months the other at 10 months, but one of my children did not start walking around things until around 10 months and did not walk on his own until a bit after his year birthday. I personally believe children should not be froced to learn to walk, if they are interested, and doing it on their own so be it. I totally hate seeing mothers holding on to their childrens hands (they can barely stand on their own) tellin them to walk.

I agree with everyone else on here 6 months is when the start to crawl not walk. My 2 yr old daughter walked a 13 months and crawled at 8 months as she rolled everywhere she wanted to go before crawling. My son is 7 wks old now and is trying to roll over already. Also my sisters youngest started to really walk at 14 months.

i took childcare at my high school in the fall of 08 right before my daughter was born and i just completed a psychology human growth and development class last month. all the books and doctors that i have encountered say that it is usually 10-14 months the earliest is 8 and usually the latest is like 16 months. maybe she meant to say crawling cause that is the age for crawling that she told u

I have never heard of a baby walking by 6 months. My son was 9 months and that was on the early side. 11 or 12 months is pretty normal so I don't know where she heard that 6 months was when babies start walking. That's early they are still working on sitting up then. I also have and Early Childhood Degree and I know that babies are not really developmentally ready to walk that early.
