I need help weaning my toddler

I have breastfed my daughter for almost 13 months. Quite miraculous as I have struggled with my milk supply. I tried to bottle feed at four months however she wouldn't take the bottle. I tried different bottles, teats and formulas and nothing worked. I have weaned her from 5 feeds a day to 2 feeds. She won't give up her morning and night feed. She won't drink milk even after watering down. I am also concerned about her dehydrating if I can't get her to drink enough fluids. Krystal is my 4th child and I haven't experienced this problem before. I'd like another child and am concerned that breastfeeding is stopping me from conceiving. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

She will not let herself dehydrate. When she gets thirsty enough she will drink what you give her. Which should be whole milk. If you are having your cycles breast feeding will not prevent you from conceiving. Generally you just wont gain weigh as soon in the pregnancy. I was doing this same thing and having the same issue with weaning my son. He finally weaned after i was 5 months pregnant. It took my family having him stay at their house for 3 days straight and he pretty much forgot about it by the time he came home. Good luck.

My daughter has completed 19 months. But I still need to breastfeed her, though the frequency has decreased. She does'nt take milk from the bottle, if she is awake. She will only drink when she is asleep. could you please tell me the solution to this problem.

nursing her isn't stopping you from getting pregnant...offer her different little sippys and try to distract her from feeding...if you can pump some breast milk and give her it in a cup and then dilute or mix with other milk it might help wean her...if she is having wet diapers daily i wouldn't worry...all the best www.virtuesvillagellc.com

I had trouble getting my daughter to drink milt too. What worked for me was to sit down with a small glass of milk for myself and offer her drinks from it. They always want what you have! Or have a playdate and let them see the other child drinking milk. They will want some too.

I've had a break through :-) She drank a full cup of milk this morning. Although I put Banana Quick in it, lol. Only the night feed to go now.

I had some of the same problems, the only thing that worked for me to stop nursing my almost 2 y/o was I went to pull my boobie out and hide the nipple and said "it was all gone" I just explained that he was a big boy and that was only for babies. He was fine with that! For the milk thing, I bought Ovaltine (like chocolate milk but with all sorts of vitamins in it) and they both drank that!

Thank you everyone, I love this forum. We mums need to stick together and the advice is wonderful. Krystal eats everything and has no problems sleeping so I am grateful that drinking milk seems to be her only problem so far. I must admit when I fully stop feeding her I will miss the closeness.

My son did the same thing would drink everything but milk from his sippy cup. Honestly I let him wean himself when he was 16 months old he decided he didn't want to do it anymore, and it was a lot less traumatic for him then just taking it away because breast feeding is a bonding process.

I breastfeed my daughter for 13 months before I decided to wean her, I was having a similar problem because my daughter refused to drink cows milk as well. I had a Dr. appointment and I talked her about this situation and she said as long as she was drinking water and eating cheese and yogurt she would be fine. Now she is 15 months and she is slowly starting to drink more milk which I was hoping for. she is happy and healthy, I think that you should talk to your Dr. if you are concerned.

My daughter is almost 20 months old and I JUST quit breastfeeding! She has trouble digesting protein and we couldn't find a "milk" she could tolerate and like at the same time. I finally tried the new almond milk made by Silk and she LOVES it. When I first started her on it I added a little bit of chocolate and it seemed to work. Also, it is a good idea to get daddy involved on putting her to bed.....that's what we had to do. The hard time for me was mornings because she was so used to getting up and immediately eating. All-in-all it took about 3-4 weeks to completely wean her and believe me, it was not without whining and carrying on. Just give alot of extra cuddles! Good luck and be strong :-)

I would suggest you offer zippy cups. Try to see what is the juice flavor she likes the most and give her that. When it comes to weaning her, try having your husband getting her to bed at nightime and giving him a bottle so your daughter is able to drop the nighttime one. You can also try that in the mornings too. Let your husband offer her the bottle. If that doesn't work, it seems that you might run out of the milk supply and sadly she will have to let it go. Sometimes children keep breastfeeding for comfort not hunger. There are people that even when breastfeeding are able to conceive so do not worry about that. I hope that helps.

my 13 month old does the same. she is still breastfeeding and drinks lots of water and juice from d sippy cup. she loathes formula and whole milk and eats solid food in tiny quantities.she still bfeeds on demand even though my milk supply isn't much but i am scared of weaning her because she is really slender and i am afraid she will lose weight since she won't take milk.guess we will just keep persevering!

Thank you for your responses. She has been using a sippy cup for 3-4 months. She will drink water and juice but refuses milk. I shall just keep persevering.

i breastfed my oldest son for 15 months and then switched to the cuppy with the soft top. naturally they are not wanna go from a breast to a hard mouth piece. i started by only nursing at night, cuppy during the day. and eventually he didnt even nurse at night anymore.
