I've seen the oven locks that Anna is talking about.  My son is also 17 months and we didn't get the locks though.  What we do is either put up the gate to keep him out of the kitchen while we're cooking or I will put him in his booster seat and let him "help" me.  I got a set of toddler pots and pans and he loves to pretend cook lol.

They have childproof locks that go on stoves and fridges try that. I found one at target. Hope this helps.

I tell my daughter that its hot, and I let her feel the outside of the oven door when its on, to show her the warmth on it. I have held her once or twice just to open it slightly, so she can feel that blast of heat come up a few feet away from the door, and I think she gets the idea that the closer you get, the hotter it gets.

Just inform your son of the owie capabilities of this device, and if all else fails, tell him that its for food, and "You are not food" haha
