My son is 20 months old. He's very smart, as I can tell he's absorbing everything, and learning. It seems he's picking up new words every day, too, which is great. But, I've heard countless stories of children younger than him speaking in simple sentences. My son is still just speaking words. Is this normal, or should I be concerned?

He sounds like he's doing just fine. All children go out their own pace when talking. The average for talking in 2 word sentences is 2. If he learns a new word everyday then he's doing great. Before you know it he'll come up with a 2 word sentence and surprise you. When my daughter did it she was sitting in her high chair and pointed to a cup and said, "daddy's cup." It surprised me coming from a 16 month old. She's now 18 months and can say one 3 word sentence and too many words to count. She also will ramble on and on and you only catch about every other word. Just keep encouraging your son and he'll be fine.

I aksed my dotcor about this because my daughter was not saying as much as other children her age. She is 22 months. He told me that she should be saying words, and that two word sentences comes at the age of 2. I would not worry, but if you feel the need to to reassure yourself talk to your son's doctor and see what they say.

to me it sound ok coz iv always known boy speech to came on a lot later then girls like they are telling you what some thing is but you cant understand it very well my little girl is 19months and she never shuts up but you cant understand half of what she says lol so i dont think you should worry but if you are then maybe you should get the health visitor to have a listen and see what she think but i think if you just read books and say things clearly he will be fine. good luck with it.

Its totally normal. My neice who is 22 months still speaks in one word sometimes two word sentences. Children develop at their own pace and since hes saying some words, its better than NO words at this stage..
