My daughter is going to be two in april so you may have to wait a little while to do the painting but we did it about 16 months with her or so. we do crafts about 3 times a week. Every day we have play dough time she likes to squoosh it and make shapes its because of playdough time she already knows circle and square and the colors green purple and blue!
We buy cheep canvas from walmart and non toxic accrylic paints. Place a little bit of your choice colors of paint of a paper plate then use masking tape to make lines on the canvas in any random pattern. Then let your kid go to town using paint brushes or sponges or tissue paper or their hands. When it drys the next day put down some more lines of tape then repeat and repeat again the next day. Their should be a total of 3 layers. Pull off all the tape and using a very small brush let them paint on top of the painting for accents of colors. Then paint your childs hand and let them "stamp" their signatre in the corner! I did these for christmas for the familys this past year they are amazing and each one is a 3 day project or so. The best part was taking a tubby after she loved watching all the colors the water would turn. If you would like to see pictures of how they come out let me know!
