my daughter is 2 1/2 and when she gets upset or doesnt get her way she will start slapping her self in the face repeativly. Sometmes hard enough to make herself cry, if she isn't slapping herself in the face then she is continuously trying to make herself throwup by forceing herself to gag. is this normal what can i do to stop this behavior?

What I mean by letting her know is...when you're mad... say: "Mommy is mad"....

My 3 and 1 year old BOTH hit themselves or pound their head on the floor. wall, or anything else available at the time the anger, frustration begins.
Ive learned that if I make a big deal out of it, the three year old hits himself harder. If he starts, I'll ask him whats bothering him. He isnt as bad now.
Start by letting her know when you're angry or sad---let her know that its ok to verbally express her emotions and her hearing you do so will encourage her to do the same...best of luck :)

i will try it. i did notice that she seems to do it more when she is tired or really angry or frustrated. So i will see if either ignoring it works or if i try and help her to express how she feels if mabey that will help her stop what she is doing.

My daughter would hit herself in the side of the head, she's 3.5 and has a huge vocabulary and yet still does it once in awhile when she is tired and frustrated. We tell her to stop and it doesn't usually help. At times I just have to hold her on my lap until she calms down. Try to give her the words to use instead. I go with "I know you feel (mad, frustrated, angry, sad) but you can't hit anyone, not even yourself." Hopefully when she develops better communication skills she will stop doing it. So its pretty normal!

My daughter is also 2 1/2 and hits herself on the legs, and does the gagging thing when she is very upset. I ignore it. The more I watch or tell her to stop, the more she does it and cries. Time outs don't work when this happens. If it goes on too long, I put her in her bed (she's still in a crib) and let her cool off for about 15 minutes then she's OK. I think my daughter does this b/c she can't use all the words she wants to at this age and just gets frustrated. Hope this helps.
