Well, there are also 10% of all kids that kind of skip the stage of crawling and start to walk. My daughter did exactly the same, she just rolled and "crawled" like a soldier. Then she started to walk just before she turned 11 months and did her first free step on her first birthday. And when I thought my daughter would belong to those 10 %, she discovered real crawling at the age of 14 months AFTER she got quite good at walking.

So really don't worry, not every kid develops according to text books. There are always variations, and if your doc doesn't see anything abnormal, why should you need to worry?

Btw. I was told at my hospital that the only problem with skipping the crawling stage is that it becomes a bit more difficult for kids to learn to use their arms to protect their face when they stumble and fall down. So your son might to have to learn it the hard way.

Both my kids were pre-mature. My daughter 4 weeks and my son 2 weeks. I think milestones are for the birds! Boys do everything later than girls! I would keep an eye on it. Try putting him in a walker and letting him get the feeling of moving around in it. And try walking with him. If you are still concerned, the next well baby visit, just inquire about it with the Dr. Tummy time is great too! Good luck, but I think he is fine!

Kids do these things in there own time and when they are ready. My daughter didn't crawl or sit on her own until 10 months and even then it was the commando crawl and then didn't walk until 16 months. Try lots of tummy time to help develop the muscles needed for crawling and sitting up. If you are concerned then take her to the doctor and have a chat with them. All kids are different and do things when they are ready.

My son didn't start crawling till he was 9 mos almost 10 mos old. Then he got a broken leg in daycare and had a cast put on right when he was starting to pull up on things. Needless to say he didn't start walking till he was almost 15 mos old. So don't worry, he'll do it when he's ready.

My son never crawled. He walked at 9 months & then learned how to crawl. A lot of kids I know never learned how to crawl. They all started walking first.

Generally crawling, or some form of crawling, begins around 9 months of age. By the end of 6 months your LO should be able to roll from back to tummy, and use his hands to support himself in sitting. For more on age-appropriate milestones, check out this AAP-endorsed chart from Pathways Awareness: http://bit.ly/6NUpfi. If you’ve done plenty of Tummy Time with him, he should be on track with his milestones. If you’re still concerned, use the chart as a check-off and bring to your next visit with your healthcare professional to discuss. Trust your instincts – you’re the expert with your child!

Premature children are generally slower at developing and it is completely normal. It does not mean there is anything wrong with them. My daughter was 9 1/2 months when she started crawling.

My son was a few days off 10 mths before he started crawling. He walks, runs and does everything a 2.5 year old should do now. I didn't crawl at all...I walked at just after 12 months and I turned out just fine.

Please don't worry, that is TOTALLY normal. Every baby is different. In the long run, everything will even out. I know several babies that didn't crawl until close to a year.

my son refused to crawl until he was over 9 months old. He was walking within a couple of months. He just didn't care for crawling. Talk to your child's doctor about what they think.

My daughter didn't start crawling until 9 months (but she rolled around on the floor to get to point b from point a) but then was walking at 11 months. I wouldn't worry too much!

My daughter is just 9 months today and she just started crawling - she had no desire to do so....so that could be it. Kids won't do things before they're ready and want to. My older son was about 10 months before he started crawling. I agree with what everyone is saying, each kid has their own timetable.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. he is my second child and probably the reason of my being worried all the time, my first born was way ahead of his developmental milestone. whatever the books says he does it with my youngest , no. I will definitely talk with his doctor. I know that every child has his own pace to go but with all these news about autism i can't help but be worried about him.

Might sound mean, but a friend of mine had to get her son to crawl and walk, but putting a cookie in front of him. I don't think it has anything to do with him being born at 36 weeks and I don't consider that premature. Before women were only pregnant for 9 months (36 weeks). Now, someone decided we should have to carry them an extra month. 40 weeks is 10 months! A man must have thought of that one. lol.

I agree...all children hit their milestones when they are ready. Give him plenty of tummy time and if he's going after something, let him work his way to it. My son's 8 mo. as well and he's doing the commando crawl, but he's not on his knees crawling (he just rocks when he's on his knees) and he's starting to sit on his own. Is he your first child? I think first borns sometimes take longer because they don't have anyone to watch. My daughter (who's four now), tried things early, but it would take a few months for her to get it down. I would definitely talk with your doctor about milestones and what to look for.

My second son didn't crawl at all at about 10 months he started to "bum shuffle" he didn't walk til he was 15 months. Don't worry he'll do it when he's ready and not before! don't rush him.

Tummy Time! Put him on his tummy at playtime! My kids always started scooting around when something they wanted is out of their reach. Keep in mind too, some don't crawl at all. They scoot, roll and some go right to walking. Don't worry yet. He is still very young and all kids develop differently.

My son was 9 months old before he started crawling. He was 19 months when he started walking. Some kids are just slower at hitting their milestones than others. If you are sincerely concerned, speak to your child's doctor and see what they say. Every child is different.
