Opinions About Putting Young Children In Sports..

My son will be turning 4 years old this June.

I enrolled by son in Skating this winter, and for being only 3 1/2 he did great.

And now he wants to play soccer, the league said most of the kids will be 5 and 6 but they do allow 4 year olds to play as well.

I've gotten the response from some people about why would i want to push my son into sports so young, and other people that really encourage it.

My son is very active and enthusiastic and he is really interested in sports, I was just wondering what some other moms opinions where.

Our son was 4 when he started on the YMCA preschool indoor soccer league it was for 4 yr olds and he had a blast, then after that two months later he did the outdoor soccer league that was 4-5 yr olds and did fine again.

At the end of March will be his 3rd go around with soccer at 5 yrs old and he really likes it! It is his favorite sport and plays it well, then in 2 weeks his incoming kindergarten class will start baseball and he will play on that and then if he still wants to will do a round or two of YMCA swimming lessons in May. These are all his choice as he also is a very active energetic boy. Let your son do it. We never dreamed ours would love soccer as much as he does! And adores swimming class!

I say if he's asking then go for it, if he doesn't like it make him finish the season out and the don't do again next season. It's not you pushing it if he asks and if he doesnt' like you're teaching him to finish it out and not quit but that yo don't have to do it again if you don't like it.

My older son does Tae Kwon Do and my 3 yr old loves to have him teach it to him so when he turns 4 he'll be in Tae Kwon Do too if he's still interested, if he's not i'm not going to make him do it.

My parents never put me in any sports growing up and I feel like I missed out on a lot. I give my 8 year old choices between what ever sports are going on for the season and let him choose the one he wants to do. This way I'm not forcing him into anything, and he is learning about making decisions on his own at the same time! I think as long as your child wants to play let him. :) Have fun!

I'm not quite in your situation yet. My oldest is 5 and she hasn't expressed any real interest in joining an activity or sport at school yet. I wont force any of my kids to do sports but if one of them comes to me and asks me if they can join then I'll let them. As long as the league your son wants to play has more emphasis on fun than in competition I'm sure he will be fine.

I think that it's great to put him into sports at a young age. It will benifit him in the long run and he wants to do it. My 4 year old daughter wants to go into things like ballet and karate and as soon as I can I'm putting her into them. I say go for it!!
