im having the hardest time potty training my daughter. granted ive only been trying for a week now lol and i know i shouldnt expect instant results but i would really like to stop buying diapers and have her in big girl pants come summer time. shes used the potty a few times but its nothing consistant. she knows what its for and when shes wearing her diaper she tells me right AFTER she goes. how do i catch her before she goes? she ran to the bathroom the other day saying she had to potty but didnt make it onto the potty and had an accident. i have diapers and pull-ups and ive bought her some big girl panties that she seems to like. ive tried running water while shes on the potty. ive given her a lollipop and ive made a potty song lol. and i still cant get her to WANT to use the potty in a consistant pattern. please help

i know for some people this trick may not work...but my daughter (who is two) has an issue with wearing pullups or diapers..so long as she has either of those on she will pee or poo in it..so we leave her bare bottomed during the day while we are at home until she is coordinated enough to pull the undies up and down on her own...it seems to work..over the last week she appears to have more bladder control..she still has issues with going number two in her potty chair..she has used her potty chair (when not in a pullup or diaper of course) consistantly without having an accident for almost two months now..and on a fluke..when we were at a resturaunt two days ago..she had a lot of juice to drink..i had to use the restroom myself so i asked her if she wanted to go too..she said yes so i took her to the bathroom..pull down her pullup and sat her on the paper cover on the grown up potty..i told her her to go peepee..and she did..so i guess its all about when they are ready..and it takes time for them to be able to have CONTROL over their bladders and bowel movements..its still a work in progress for my little one..but i feel you on the costs associated with all this.

Katie try a reward system for when they go. I like using candy (not the most healthiest, but definately something a kid wants). I would do either jelly beans, tootsie rolls, or m&ms. I would do 1 for pee and 2 for poop. At first I would do it whenever they went on the potty. As they got more consistant then I would only give a treat if they told me they had to go instead of me taking them. I do day care and had 2 that I was potty training at the same time last year (girl/boy). They were both the same age, but the girl was more ready than the boy. Once the boy saw that the girl would get a treat for going it did not take him long before he started doing it too.

Pull-ups didn't work for my son, and so far the 1st pkg we bought for our 2 year old daughter don't seem to be working for her either... they treat them just like a diaper. We bought our daughter panties too, so I know that when we're ready to go full force with it, she'll be wearing those in the day time, and a pull up or regular night time diaper at bed time. Definitely have to be consistent with it ... I put our son on the potty chair every 20-30 minutes for at least 5 min at a time, gave him lots to drink in the day, so he'd have to go a lot, and we got more chances to try. Have you tried rewards? Maybe mini M&Ms or special cookies, just for going potty. :)

Definitely be prepared and patient when accidents happen. Best of luck!

thank you very much sarah (thats also my daughters name :) ) youre ideas and incouragment are truely helpful. i will admit that i do get discouraged when she doesnt take on to things as much as i hope for. she likes her big girl panties and doesnt seem to like it when she has an accident in them. i dont think pull ups do the trick like i thought they would. or the diapers. thank you so much to all that reply with more ideas and suggestions. im more than open and willing to hear them all.

If she is excited about the potty training and wants to wear the big girl panties. I would let her know what the big girl panties are for big girls that go potty on the potty chair. Let her know that when she puts them on then she is a big girl and needs to go potty in the potty chair. Then put on the big girl panties!! Reminder her often and even take her to the potty on a regular basis (when I first start out I take them about every hour until they start to get more consistant). She will most likely have some accidents. I think having the panties on instead of pull-ups or diapers during the day helps. They don't like the feeling of being wet (feeling wet in panties is much different than feeling we in pull-ups (even the wet feel ones) ). I find that they tend to put more effort in trying to go potty on the potty chair when they don't like that wet feeling. Some get it really fast and others take awhile to figure out all the potty stuff, so don't get discouraged keep rewarding the big girl behavior.

I would start buying the pull ups and have her wear lil girl undies during the day
