At three I think it reasonable for your child to learn colors, numbers and shapes. All very easy to teach! When you read to him, have him point out all the red, all the square and count items on a page. When you shop, have him count items, talk about the properties of things: "we need apples, apples are red, one, two, three apples" You will be amazed at how quickly he will pick stuff up without there having to be a formal lesson.

I don't believe that's necessary. I think that pressure is produced in order to justify putting a child in preschool. But it's my opinion that time spent with a parent is most important in the formative years. I also wouldn't put pressure on yourself to have to teach him all the things you listed. However, it wouldn't hurt to start introducing them just so he becomes familiar. I would start with colors then shapes. What kinds of things does he enjoy doing now?

I agree. Kids are little for so short a time, why rush them into preschool? Do many kids go to preschool? Sure. Do they have too, or should they? Not necessarily. Reading, singing and playing with your child will help him master the skills he needs to learn!

He does not have to be in preschool. There are no laws that say he has to do that but he should be learning and knowing some of his colors, shapes, and even maybe recognizing letters and numbers too and you can work on that at home with him yourself. You just need to be sure to get him into playgroups to socialize.
