I have read on here about kids in school and nursery (kindergarten to you Americans) I was wondering if someone could tellme the school ages etc. in America. In the UK children go to nursery age 3-4 for half a day either morning or afternoon. reception class age 4-5 which is full days and then primary school year 1 age 5. high school is age 11-12 where you will leave age 16 or stay on for another year or 2 in years 7 & 8. and go on to college then to university is an option after leaving school. these ages of course depend on where your birthday falls in that year. like everyone each academic year has a cut off date for ages. if your 5 birthday is after october then you will not start school untill the following academic year. school times are usualy 8.30am till 3.30pm. school starts usualy around 4 september for 5 weeks then there is a weeks break. then back to school untill the christmas holidays where there is another week break. back to school for 7 weeks for a 2 week break then another 5 weeks then the easter week break. back to school for 7 weeks then a week off then back to school for another 7 weeks then the 6 weeks summer break. the 5 and 7 weeks are average sometimes it could be 6 weeks. how does this differ from american schools

Sounds pretty similar. We have alot of holidays around here, some are national holidays which everything including banks, and government offices are closed then you have other ones that only schools and things close. We pretty much close for just the day, except for the schools during christmas, thanksgiving, and easter breaks, those are longer, but offices are usually only closed on that day.

in term times and ages then theres not a lot of difference just you finish a couple of years after us. you close jewish holidays we have what aer called bank holidays which are national days of for everyone. the country practicaly comes to a stand still fror these. christams day and the day after, good friday and new year day are bank holidays so if they fall on a weekend you will then get the friday or following monday off. schools work places some shops and buses will close.

As far as preschools there is no set age, every preschool and area is different. Ages are usually 3-4 but some go half days while other full days, some go 2 days a week some go five. Most kids start kindergarten at age 5 (usually they are already 5 or will be five within a few months after school starts). Then you have elementary schools (most house kindergarten classes), 1st-4th grades mostly, some share buildings with middle school grades 5th-8th, then it is high school 9th-12th grade. The school system can be confusing to people outside of the U.S. Basic age is that you start regular school (kindergarten) at age 5 and graduate from high school at age 18. Most schools start around the beginning of September; I live in NY and schools typically run from september till June). Some schools however holds classes year round, there are many different types of schools and every state has their own system. Vacation is based on the U.S. National list of holidays, The kids typically get a long vacation around Christmas time and then again in the spring, these are typically 1-2 weeks long. They have many days off in between there. And every area is different, being that I live in NYC our public schools are closed on Jewish holidays but other areas of the state don't close for these holidays. Like I said before for people outside of the U.S. it can be confusing. And most schools are closed for the months of July and August for summer vacation.
