Hi everyone. My husband and i are going to take the side off our 20mo boys crib. The only thing i am worried about is we let him sleep with his door open so i'm paranoid about him strolling into our room or out to his toys at all hours. Should we be shutting his door at night? he sleeps straight through but i think he will freak if he gets up and his room is shut off. Should i put a little gate on his door? Thanks

i have a gate on my sons doorway its gr8 he doesnt get to distressed as he can see etc he just shouts mum and im there highly recommended

Wow Nikki, I didn't know that. Is because with a door closed the smoke can't get in as easily? I might have to start closing her bedroom door now all the way! Thanks for that piece of advice!

I was always against having bedroom doors closed, until I went to fire training and learned that the risk of dying in a house fire is severely increased if you sleep with your doors open. So my daughter has just had to get used to it, I will always take safety over personal preference. Just food for thought I had no idea until I went to this course.

I would not worry about it too much, just make sure his surroundings are safe and maybe use a baby monitor so that you can hear him if he gets up. I bet that if you take the side off and shut his door he will start to have some problems. Every kid is diff but i have never had a prob with open doors and kids wandering and getting into unsafe situations. Good luck :o)

Definately buy a gate they are a godsend, and i knwo you are worried about your son playing with his toys and he probably will to begin with (my son was 16months when he had a bed) and started refusing to sleep and wanted to pplay just cuz it was a new experience but that lasted a week he will learn with time

My daughter has a baby gate so that the door can be open and she can come to the gate and yell for me if she needs me. Most nights we only leave the door open a crack anyways, she's learning all about door knobs, and I'm sure yours will soon too if he hasn't started yet and i'm too scared that without the gate she'd get her door open and fall down the stairs. I think a gate is a wonderful option.
