Teaching my 3 yr old about strangers

My son is turning 3 in about 2 weeks from now, and we were at the playground today and a adult male (who we didn't know) started talking to my son and my son went over to him to talk to him. I want to teach my son that he can't talk to people he doesn't know, however he is a very outgoing child and I don't want him to think that he can't play with other children or talk to certain peopla ie policemen and firemen etc. How should I teach a 3 yr old about this?

kids who hear the stranger speach tend to think strangers are supposed to be scary looking. then anyone they don't know who looks NICE couldn't be a STRANGER!



i haven't had this issue come up yet, but i'm wondering if telling them they shouldn't talk to new adults unless a parent or parent substitute tells them it's ok and is with them when they do. i'm not sure about all this. scares the crap out of me personally...

although, the statistics are on your side...kids taken by strangers are very rare...it's family and friends you have to really worry about statistically speaking :(

Hi Sonia. Well I used to tell my kids the all time classic 'Stranger is a danger'. Explained to them that even if someone says their name it doesn't mean you know them. Thing about checking amazone kids books, search word 'Stranger' and a list of books will come up for all ages. Maybe you will find a book that will help you with that more in depth.
