Thumb sucking?

I was recently at a b-day party and my sister was there with her 6mnth old. He kept trying to suck his thumb and she wouldn't let him. Her father was there also and made derogaroty comments and children that suck their thumbs. My daughter is almost 3 and sucks her thumb. I personally don't see a problem with it. She'll stop when she's ready but i was wondering what other mothers thought on the subject.

The reason for not allowing a child to suck their thumb is because it can cause the teeth to move and therefore cause a need for braces. If you can get your daughter to find a doll or anything else that helps her feel comforted I would as sucking the thumb is a hard habit to break. My cousin didn't finally stop sucking his thumb until after he was 12 and this was not so great as he was teased repeatedly about it.
