Trying to kick the bottle...how did you do it?

My baby just turned one and we're working on getting rid of the bottle. She will drink anything out of a sippy cup, juice box, straw, EXCEPT milk! If she drinks milk out of anything other than a bottle she will let it flow out of her mouth.

So I'm looking for tips on how to get rid of the bottle. If you had a hard time getting rid of the bottle but in the end you won, I would love your advice!

Going cold turkey with the bottle worked great for my dtr. We never turned back! She's always been a good milk drinker. I know docs want whole milk for the 1st yr, so I don't know about a substitute. Just keep pushin!! My advice would be to keep giving her the milk in the sippy, maybe she's just not used to the texture/flow yet.

The night before my daughters first birthday, we packed and put away all of her bottles. We started her cold turkey the next day on milk in her sippy cup. We also used the Nuby cups and she transitioned great. She wasn't that keen on the regular milk that first day but a friend told me that her doctor said to buy the powdered strawberry Nesquik. We only put like a half a spoon full in her cup and she loved it. We only add the strawberry now when she asks for it. If she doesn't ask, we just give her regular milk and she drinks it. Good luck!

We just took it away from our daughter. Cold Turkey. She had a hard time the first night, but after that she was fine. They adjust very quickly. We are the ones who worry so much. LOL.

This was the night time bottle we took away this way. The other bottles we did away with one at a time. Good luck.

She's good! We went cold turkey and just took all the bottles away...she wasn't mad about that, she just doesn't like the taste of milk. I read somewhere else that someone mixed OJ with the milk so we tried it. SHE LOVES IT! I never would've thought about it but how wonderful it is. The Doc said it's fine, if she likes it...no problem.

She doesn't take a pacifier and will go to sleep without a bottle or sippy. We really have a wonderful baby. Daycare still puts her to sleep with her cup even though she doesn't need it. :(

I agree, I used the Nuby as well with 2 of my 3 kids and plan on using it again with my 3rd baby. Good luck!

a few months after my son turned 1 we started only giving him the bottle at night. (we were a little slow on getting rid of it!) we started giving him everything in a sippy cup during the day (including milk) and then one bottle of milk at night. then after that was okay for a while we only gave him 1 bottle of water at night. then finally (at 19 months) we took the bottle away completely. he now takes a sippy cup of water to bed still, but the bottle is gone!!! it is hard and there is lots of crying...but in 3 or 4 days its totally forgotten about. : )

I had my son (I think he was about 12 or 13 months old) help me put all the bottles in a trashbag (except one which he carried) and had him help me carry the bag to the trash outside where we threw away the bag and he threw in his one bottle he was carrying. Then we said "bye bye bottles!' When we came back in I gave him his sippy cup. It was great until bedtime - then he wanted his bottle. But since I threw them all out, he (and me too!) had to battle through it. Took about 3 days and he was fine with it.

When she spills the milk out of the sippy don't give in and put it in the bottle. That's what she wants and she knows how to manipulate you to get it. Tell her it's sippy or no milk then if she spills it then take it away. Wait about 5 or 10 minutes then try again. Get rid of all your bottles so you aren't tempted to give in to her demands.
You could also try letting her pick out a cup next time you go to the store...a special cup just for milk. That way she will still feel she's in control but you are getting what you want. I would recommend aa cup with a straw instead of a sippy cup, though. Sippy cups and bottles work the same way (letting milk pool in the mouth before swallowing) as opposed to the straw where most of the milk never touches the teeth.

We got rid of my son's bottles one at a time. Once a day, he'd get a sippy cup with milk, then his morning and night time bottles were still milk from a bottle. If she's already drinking other drinks from the sippy cup, then try only serving milk from the sippy, and putting plain water in the bottle. Eventually ( unless she loves water) she'll become less interested in the bottle.

If she doesn't drink the milk from the cup, she won't get the milk. Substitute with other dairy items to offset the loss of those vitamins. Also keep in mind, that she's starting to need less milk so don't get too worried about a lost serving or two.

Yery helpful comments, I'm doing the same thing with my one year old. He won't drink milk from a cup but will tea! Cold turkey may be the way to go!

My daughter did the exact thing! She used one cup for milk and everything then we bought her the take and toss cups to try. she would only use those for milk. I'm pretty sure we bought every single kind of sippy before those ones. Just be patient with her. does she still take a pacifier???

We still give our 2 year old "bottle" but it contains juice or soy milk as he has been weened off a long time ago. He does know how to use a straw and regular cups (hates sippy cups). I don't know if I should feel guilty or what...but he loves his bed time drink (milk) at night and since he holds the bottle well...we just let him use it. I think once he gets older, he will automatically get rid of his bottle habit as he only uses it for juice and milk. I am trying to entice him with coacoa so he can use his sippy cup more. But he drinks just fine from a straw or even a regular adult cup! I'd say just give your baby time and they'll automatically "mature."

Slowly remove a bottle at a time first the early afternoon one then the late morning one he or she has one in the morning and night then remove the morning one then the night one my son wouldn't drink out of the sippy cup for a few weeks but now is fine. he will now drink everything out of the sippy cup and my daughter now has a morning and night bottle and sippy cups during the day in a couple of week i will remove the morning and then eventually the night one too

My son lost his bottle cold turkey the same day as I took away his pacifier. He adjusted really well and didn't even seem to miss either one. I suppose I got lucky. We started out with the soft spouted nuby cups also but that didn't last more than one month because he chewed them up.

I just switched to a soft topped sippy cup and then as they got used to that then I changed to a hard topped sippy cup. Now my oldest still uses a sippy cup but at dinner time he uses a regular one. By using the soft tip they get the feeling of the rubber and it doesn't hurt their mouths. At a young age they are cutting teeth and stuff and the hard sippy cups can just hurt.

Quoting Brandi:

With both of my boys (4 and 2 now) I took their bottles away when they turned one cold turkey!! I think it is easier and less confusing. Neither of them had any problems because I also used the nuby cups. She might just not like the taste of milk. The bottle nipple almost bypasses taste buds and the milk just goes down :) As long as she is getting enough dairy during the day she will be okay without milk for a little while.
Neither of my boys like white milk. We get nesquick powder that has little to no sugar in it to flavor it up a bit and they love it! You might try that and see if she likes it better that way! Good luck :)

i agree!! I took the bottle away cold turkey when my daughter turned one but like you said my daughter did not like to drink milk out of the sippy cup either. She didnt like the taste of it so we also tried using nesquick powder to flavor it up and she got used to drinking it. Now she is fine drinking it with out anything added to it. Good luck!! ;-)

My son sounds very similar to your daughter - he loved his bottle. At first I was stressed because the books I had read and our early childhood nurse said that they should be off bottles at 1. But every child is different and i don't think there is any harm if they don't give it up by 1. My son didn't give up the bottle until he was close to 1.5yo.
My suggestions would be perhaps take her shopping and let her select a bottle that is different from the rest and is only for her milk. Or, even wean her off bit by bit eg only give her the bottle at night time and/or introduce the new cup bit by bit. Does your daughter go to daycare or playgroup? Sometimes when they see their little friends using cups etc they get inspired!
It will happen in time ...I'd be more worried if she was 3 and still on a bottle!

You can't give into your child, your the parent. Give her milk in sippy cup, if she won't drink it because it is in the sippy cup, then she won't be drinking milk.

with my son i just took the bottle away shortly after he turned 1. it's better for their teeth. and the longer you let her win the harder it will be. try just taking it away from her, don't substitute it with a sippy cup cuz the milk is still sitting on her teeth and causing a lot of plaque build up. my son had a hard time for the first couple nights but is doing awesome and it's been over a month. he still says ba ba but i don't think it's cuz he wants one. i'm sure you'll find something that works for you and your daughter, good luck

I agree with the cold turkey method! Kids will get over anything with enough time. We used the Sippy cups with the top that felt like a nipple. Of course, our boy was around a lot of his older cousins through the summer and saw how they drank out of regular cups and he was over the sippy cup in no time!

when we weened our son from the bottle we just had to do it cold turkey...we got rid of all the bottles so there wasn't a choice of giving in. As for not drinking milk out of the cup...i wouldn't give her anything else other than milk until she decides to drink it....your child wont go too long before she gets thirsty and gives in. The total transition took about 3 or 4 challenging days and now he does great!

I would agree with Brandi... cut out the bottle cold turkey!! When both of my boys turned one, I went to the trash and threw away all of the bottles. This way I could not give in to them. With my first one, milk was very hard to get used to. My advice- don't give her anything but milk to drink until she gets used to it. If she is thirsty, she will drink it.

My daughter made the transition with the soft spout Avent sippy cups. I also had to warm the milk in the beginning and as she got used to the taste I gradually cooled it til she was drinking it straight from the fridge.

my son did the same thing. so we just gave him a sippy with water in it to go to bed

(he prefers water over everything else) We had to give up milk for a while, but he had plenty of other dairy products throughout the day. It worked for us.

That's what we're using and the stinker just lets it flow out of her mouth...it's like she knows where she wants the milk to come from. If I put water in that cup she'll drink it up. I guess we're on the right path just need to be persistent...

We used the sippy cups by Nuby. Thier spout is still soft like a nipple, but its in the shape of a sippy cup. Now our son will drink milk out of any sippy cup. It seemed like it was a nicer transition for him.
