My son is 3 will be 4 in Feb. He knows most of his colors & knows how to count to 10;but doesn't know too many numbers or letters yet.I have him doing a preschool book, but he mostly needs my help making the numbers/letters correctly and he doesn't seem to remember them for too long. There is no rush.Children progress at different levels.I have one daughter that was reading pretty good at 5 and my other daughter is 6 and just starting to read.I homeschool and one thing I really like about that is that children are allowed to progress at their own level. Not all children should be forced to learn at the same pace. And I would not consider a child behind unless he is not reading at all by the age of 7 or 8.

Really depends in the kid. My son was reading books at 3 (words at 2) but that is crazy early. He knew colors & letters prior to 2. Most kids learn to read in K or early 1st grade. If you think your son might be delayed look up ASQ (ages & stages questionnaire) online & take it w him. Good luck

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My son only started recognizing some letters, and doing numbers. I'm still unsure how he picked up colors yet...
Though I think it might have to do with these awesome DVD's I found he plays a lot. They are the Preschool Prep Series. Colors, numbers, shapes. They have sight words but I refuse to let my son watch them. They have some new ones out with letter sounds I may be picking up shortly.

Yes, that is the generalization. It totally depends on the kid though. My best friend's son first learned to talk in sentences by learning to read... at 3. ;)

Actual reading? Or are you just asking what do they know?
My girls started reading at 3.5, but they were EARLY readers. 'Typical' age for beginning reading is 4-6ish....
My now 3.5 year old son knows a lot of colors, basic shapes, can count to 20 w/ minimal assistance, 'mostly' has numerical concepts up to around 10, and says all the ABC's and knows most of their sounds... but can't quite recognize all of them yet. From what he knows now compared to what his sisters knew... I 'think' he may be ready to start reading in about a year.... That's just a guess though. He might be ready earlier... or later. Either way is fine w/ me.
