all children differ but my daughters started about 12 months, basically when i was giving them 9 oz bottles and it wasnt filling them up, and when they start eating soft foods properly but you can feed them formula til they are two, its your choice.

Her daughter did not want formula after she had milk. So she couldn't give her milk or formaula she had such a hard time after that. I hope this helps. Good Luck

Mothers are going to crusify me for this but i had both my children on cows milk by 6 months. i never used formula i breastfed both until 6 months then it was onto the cows milk. I mixed it with water so it was weaker until they were used to it and they still got the boob while i was doing that. And neither of my children have any sort of allergies at all. But Dr's and health ppl do say 12 months is what is recommended.

Hemp milk, oat milk, almond milk can be found at health food stores (and occasionally grocery stores). They're just alternatives to cow's milk. We're not vegans or even vegetarians, but I didn't want my youngest to have cow's milk because most of my kids are sensitive to cow's milk. If he was still breastfed it wouldn't be an issue at all~ I'd just nurse him and he'd get breastmilk. But since he's not, when I weaned him off formula I cut the formula with hemp or oat milk in each bottle, then slowly got him off formula completely so that he's now on only hemp or oat milk. Next step, getting rid of bottles. ;-) lol

What is hemp and oat milk? I've never seen that? Is it for a vegan diet?

I started one of my boys on milk at 9 months old and it was a Disaster. I didn't Know it was a disaster until he was about 7 yrs old though... He developed dairy sensitivities from having it too young and it caused him a lot of problems.

The rest of my kids got cow's milk after they were 1 yr. The majority of my kids only get milk on their cereal at breakfast time, and my youngest (22 mos) has never had cow's milk. He likes hemp and oat milks.

At 12 months our pediatrician recommended switching him to whole milk. We also swtiched him over to a sippy cup shortly thereafter. Neither was an easy transition.

I started giving her whole milk and formula by 11 months. By 12 months she was strictly on whole milk.

wow, i didn't know this was such a heated subject for some people. my daughter had to be on soy formula, any made from milk made her sick. but at 11 months i decided to add just a splash of milk to her bottle(she still used one at bedtime) and she did fine. around her first birthday i had it up to half and half milk/formula and very slowly changed the amounts. now she's 2 1/2 and drinks a lot of milk. after she turned 1 i did use the formula for older babies, since they have different nutritional needs. she's now a super picky eater and we have a whole different issue.

My oldest daughter refused formula at 10 months after she got a taste of milk. My younger daughter was about 13 months old before she would take the milk. It just depends on the child.

Amanda: I've done a lot of research on the subject because my daughter is allergic to the protein in cow's milk and I just wanted to let you know that soy and/or rice milk ARE NOT A GOOD EVERY DAY ALTERNATIVE to cow's milk! There are several reasons why and here's a link that just starts to touch on them.....

http://www.dogpile.com/clickserver/_iceU...

I'm not claiming to know everything, and I do still give my daughter the occasional glass of soy milk but I decided that for us, it's not an every day replacement for cow's milk.....my daughter is offered a variety of other sources of calcium and protein ......ie. cheese, yogurt, spinach, broccoli, beans, peas.....oranges etc. .....but in reality she doesn't always eat them so I decided that a ' follow-up ' formula, although more exspensive than cow's milk, was a better choice than soy milk!

Hope this helps?

Jessica, I don't think your wrong. But at 1 year kids should be eating a wide variety of solid foods from which they get the vitamins and minerals they need for proper development. I started weening my children from soy formula to cow's milk at 11 months. All three were completely on whole milk at 1 year. They are perfectly smart and healthy and actually quite tall for their ages. Milk, of course, isn't meant to be the only source of nutrition. You do have to make sure they are eating a variety of foods. As far as milk allergies or intolerance, there are some amazing soy and rice milks available. I personally was allergic to milk as a child and still have problems with it. Lactaid is my favorite. It's a little sweeter than cows milk.

my daughter is 13 months and im proud to say she has not had milk yet, i think its a shame we switch our children so early. milk does not have all the vitamins for proper brain development in children and it is very hard for them to digest. my daughter is still drinking formula all day long in a sippy, plus she eats cheese and yogurt.

I started my daughter with milk at 10 months. Goes against everything they tell you but I really didn't see any harm, she took to it just fine. You do need to monitor the child when you first introduce it, like any other new food.

We started adding in a couple oz of milk here and there around 9.5 mos (as the doctor suggested to start then) so right at 12 mos seh was able to go to 100% whole milk.

Jennifer: I've done a lot of research on soy and rice milk.......although the soy based formulas are a good substitute, soy and rice milk are NOT recommended for an every day substitute! And the other thing I wanted to stress is that just because ur kids didn't have a reaction to other dairy products....ie. yogurt and cheese, neither did my daughter but she IS allergic to cow's milk because it hasn't been put thru the same process as cheese and yogurt to break down the proteins. I've done a lot of research on this subject! Here's a link if ur interested just beginning to touch on some of the concerns of soy milk.....

My kids started at 11 months, as I introduced dairy products earlier I knew there was no concerns for allergies to milk or milk products. If you are worried about allergies use Soy base

I started my son on whole milk when he was 1. I mixed it with his formula for a bit at first and then slowly just stopped putting the formula in. My doctor said that once they are a year is best to start introducing them to milk. If you are not 100% sure when to start then you hsould consult your family doctor.

The day after his first birthday. I switched him to whole milk and he took it immediately. You can also mix it for a while to get them use to the taste.

My 18 month old still isn't on milk but that's because she's allergic to the protein in cow's milk! She doesn't have bottles anymore but still occasionally drink her ' follow-up formula for enfants 12-18+ months!

They recommend waiting until 12 months to introduce cow's milk and its for the exact reason my daughter is allergic.......it's extremely hard, even for an adults to break down the proteins in cow's milk! It's believed the younger you introduce it the more likely an allergy will be present although MOST children grow out of this allergy by the age of 2! We're crossing our fingers! LOL! My daughter can still have things like yogurt and cheese because they've been put thru a process that has already broken down those proteins!

All that bein said, I know lots of mums that introduced milk by 9 months......I definitely wouldn't suggest it any earlier than that!
