This is where toy guides are AWESOME. Many websites offer age ranges to choose from when viewing toys. Try viewing some of the toys found in his actual age range vs. the age range he seems to be at maturity wise. Maybe this will help with some ideas.
Plus, what are his interests. Does he like to construct things, is he into artsy things, does he like action figures, play games, etc. These are things for us to know that could help us give you even more suggestions.

My nephew always loved building bricks like lego or mega bloks are bigger and less likely to be swallowed, he's played with them from around 2yrs and he's 8yrs now and still like to build. Building bricks promote good hand eye co-ordination and imaginitive play

My son loves his wooden train set. Does your son have a tricycle yet? If he is tall enough he should be able to learn how to peddle it this year.

I'd say go with whatever it is he likes. My son is 2 1/2 and tends to like things that are out of his age range. As long as their aren't any parts he could harm himself with, I'd say it's okay. That's always been how I've judged toys.
