My granddaughter lives away from me and I'm not able to be there for her first birthday. I really want to get her something special as a keepsake but nothing too extravagant since I'm on a budget. Any ideas? I really appreciate any help. Thanks!

How about writing a loving note telling your grandchild how much you love her, what a miracle she is, share a special memory with her, etc.? If you're crafty you could make the note part of a scrapbook page. I've done that for both of my kids and am positive it will be a treasure in the years to come, letting each know how very special they are to me. Sometimes the best gifts don't need to cost anything, but come from the heart.

My mom gave my son a really nice piggy bank with his name on it (she lives far away also) and she always sends him cards for the holidays (halloween, July 4th etc.) with $5.00 inside. He runs to his piggy and puts it in. Its really cute.

you could use the bracelet or necklace idea for Christmas, Easter, or Valentine's Day. I like the pearl idea. :)

My mother bought my daughter for her first birthday a necklace with one pearl. Every year on her birthday she gets another pearl. When she is 21 she will have a full necklace. It was a great gift and not very expensive because you by a small part every year.

Thank you for both ideas so far. I really like the idea of engraving something, maybe a piggy bank and I love the charm bracelet idea a lot. I'm big on traditions so I may just go with both. :)

have you considered a charm bracelet? They have some really inexpensive ones at places like Target or Wal-mart. Then you could add too it each year. there are a wide variety of charms both in gold and silver. it would also be something she as a teenager would treasure. it would be a really great way to commemorate each year because you can add charms that will remind her of something special she did that year. example, first steps=booty, first day of school= apple charm. things like that. best of luck and hope she has a great birthday.

My son's grandmothers neighbor found some silver plated cute little booties for his first birthday I was going to have them ingraved. That maybe something in your budget?? or something similar? Good luck! and Happy Bday to your granddaughter!
