It all depends on wht she is into and how much time you want to put into it. My son for his 2nd had a train and for my kids combined 2 & 3 they had a car each which they picked out the colour the night before. It all depends on time, what they like and your cupboard stocks lol
Last year for my stepsons 5th we done dinosaurs and this year for my sons 5th he has asked for a car again. :) so many options to choose from.
You can do a lot with a car also make it very girly with pretty pink or purple decorations have fun with it

If you don't mind a character cake and she wants it then why not? I'd do a fairy one if my boy asked. I did a plain cake for 1 and 2. 1 he barely noticed and 2 he was so excited by all the toys he didn't give a toss about the cake. He'll be 3 in July and fully understands the birthday party concept. He's saying he wants a frog cake, I'm hoping he sticks with that, sounds like a fun challenge :)

You should do what your daughter likes. Afterall it is HER birthday NOT yours. I personally do not do character anything.....I think it is tacky...My kids cakes have always been things they are REALLY into.

Cars would be cute, patel colored ones. Cupcakes are very popular for kids parties as well. You can pass them out individually and dont have to worry about having a half of sheet of uneaten cake left in the fridge.
