I started my son right before he turned 4 months. He was just not getting enough out of formula.

My daughter had cereal first at the end of 3 months and then started baby food a few weeks later. I tried the cereal in a bottle feeder for baby cereal, but my daughter wanted more so the next time I gave it to her on the spoon and she loved it. You just have to watch for allergies and constipation with trying new things, but if you think your baby is hungry and ready for food then go for it.

my first i gave it to him at 3 mon. he was ready and it was really runny rice cereal. rice cereal is the best 1st introduction before veggies. it has the least amount of allergic reactions and tastes mostly like formula/breast milk. i mixed my son's cereal with formula for the first 3-4 weeks and gradually thickened it.
most ped.'s doctors will say to wait until they are setting up b/c introducing food too early has been lead to childhood obesity, but i am a full believer in "everything in moderation". also, only feed your child cereal once a day for a week or so, too much food at once will give them a tummy ache and upset their tummy. i also recommend only a 1 tsp. of cereal at first, their bellies are only the size of a quarter or smaller. they do not need as much.
good luck, these are the fun photo days of their first foods! enjoy!

ok, i broke the rules, my dr.was old school and my son held his head up from the get go. they say once they can sit up, so we started him on cereal (1 tbs) at 6 weeks, and increased as he needed it, at 3 months I started veggies then fruits, and at 6 months he was eating finger foods like cherios. With my daughter i waited til 10 weeks for cearal. I think ever baby is different. But the mom who wrote once they taste real food they do not want baby food is correct. But I do not think that it is bad and I saved a lot once he was eating what we ate and not jarred mush, plus at almost 2 he will eat anything including mushrooss, spinach and asparagus

I also started my boys around 3-4months. On softer foods to start with. And introduce new foods gradually (ie. one at a time, every few days) as this can give you an indication of any allergies that you may not know about. Once you know there are no allergies then i agree that you just take note of what they are indicating to you. And i believe that the sooner you can get them to eat a variety of foods they may not be so picky later on.

I started my daughter on the cereals (first rice) at about 4 mo. Once I saw that she enjoyed that, I started making my own mashed veggies. The only pureed fruit that I used was apple and prunes (because she needed it). I mashed my own bananas and after steaming the veggies, I used a hand blender and water to make her food. I did not start using the Gerber finger food until she was about 7 mo. old. You need to take cues from your baby as to if they are ready for food.

well... let me first say this - once they get the taste of real food, they do not want the baby food anymore and i cant say that i blame them so make sure youre ready if you are gonna start the switch! i started my son at 4 months with like gerber cookies and small bites of soft bland foods like yogurt or mashed potatoes depending on what i was snacking on. i think normally 4-6 months is proper but the kid will let you know too. just watch for signs that they are either ready or not for change! good luck! this is a huge step!!!

I started my boys on food when they were about 4mths old, getting them ready for the taste of food. It really depends on how you feel about giving them the tin food (puree) or making your own....
