For some children the "terribles" never stop. I think it depends on how they are disciplined and what they are allowed to get away with. My son is 2 1/2 and is learning very quickly what consequences are. I am using time outs, will take his favorite toys away, turn off his favorite video, as well as praise or reward acceptable behavior. I am very consistent and have our family members on board with disciplining him in the same manner. My friend's daughter is completely wild and gets away with murder! My friend doesn't discipline her at all (except for bribery and open ended threats) and her daughter is almost 5 and acts worse than she did at 3. She pushes all of her mom's buttons and gets away with it. She thinks she the boss and has her parents wrapped around her little finger. So, I truly think it depends on how we handle the terrible 2's and 3's as parents. It takes a lot of time and patience but I have friends that told have told me the terrible 3's are worse then the terrible 2's and they'll outgrow it between 4 and 4 1/2.

I saw your question just now while I was on the phone with my 80 year old aunt. She's basically my mom, raised me as her own since I was 10. I asked her when the terrible 3's stop and she said to tell you "When they turn 82 and are back in diapers" (she's referring to my uncle, her husband of 62 years). LOL!

"When they are married and have kids of their own..."
I am wondering the same thing. That is what my mother tells me everytime I call her to talk about my 3 yr old.
