I have a 14 month old son who began walking at 10 months old and runs around like crazy. We go on walks with the stroller around the neighborhood, but I'm afraid to just go outside and walk with him. At what age did your child walk with you without trying to run off? What cues showed you they were ready? I just can't wait till he can explore more. I guess I could take him to the park, but that is not always feasible as we live in the city and it takes a trek to just get there...

Once my son started walking, he was walking by himself (holding my hand of course). He loves being able to walk around with out being strapped to something. Life is so much more exciting when you are experiencing it rather than watching it! We always did the hand holding thing, and one day when we were on our walk and there were no cars in sight, I let go of his hand, and he walked next to me, when we had to cross the street, I told him to hold my hand while we crossed it, and then he could let go again afterward. Now when we go on walks he runs up and down the side walk and waits for me before crossing the street. Sometimes he likes to hold the dogs leash, so I'll let him hold the handle, and I'll hold the middle of the leash so Duke won't go too fast. They both love the interaction! When we are on a path in the woods, (like a nature trail) I let them both go free.

Our eldest started walking at 9mths and from the start we made him hold our hands whenever he was outside, except in the backyard or at a park. Now (20mths) he knows he has to hold our hand, or the strap on the pram (we also have a 10wk old).
We just kept telling him he needed to hold our hand. On our daily walks, he'll sometimes want to walk and hold the strap on the pram, other times he'll want to take a seat. I let him guide me as to how much energy he has, but he always has to be attached to me or the pram as he's way too fast if he took off hehehe
