My son is 11 months old. I was wanting to get rid of the bottle soon. However, I have tried and tried to give him a sippy cup but he won't take to it. He will only drink out of a straw. He also will only hold his own bottle is he is laying down because he does not get it that you have to lift it up. Any ideas on how I can start getting him to take to his cup?

I had the same problem. I started to put cold water in his bottle and warm milk in his sippy cup, never juice. I only gave him juice from a cup with a straw (This worked for me since my son loved his milk more than juice) I would also dip the top of his sippy cup into the milk so that when I put it in his mouth he would taste the milk and try to suck. This is what I gave him for naps and bedtime. The sucking was soothing for him and helped him get to sleep. After I had him drinking only out of a sippy cup then I would give him water instead of milk at bedtime. I also used the baby einstein sippy cups since they had two handles and a soft but sturdy spout. It's ok if he refuses the sippy cup at first because when he gets thirsty enough he will drink from it. This does not mean you should dehydrate your child. I gave my son 9 oz of milk from a bottle in the morning when he woke up and that was all he got unless he used his sippy cup during the day.

I don't have much advice on getting rid of the bottles as my 3 are still using them at 18 mos. They will drink from a cup(regular not sippy) but not in the quantity (without so much mess it's easier for me for them to drink from the bottle) necessary. People I know that have gotten rid of them have done it cold. As in just stop and they'll get the hang of it quickly. Mine are all relatively small weightwise, (one in 3% for weight, but 75% for height) so it makes me a little nervous trying to do it. The muscles they use for sucking from a straw help with speech so this truly is something you want to encourage.

We use the soft spout Sip and Smile too! It has been the best cup for Brooke. It also took her while, though, to get used it it and I just kept trying different brands. He will catch on eventually :)

I agree the straw is a good skill. It can however be too messy. I went through a bunch of different sippies but both girls learned real fast with the soft spout Sip and Smile, can't remember the brand maybe Gerber. It has to be the soft spout, it feels more like a bottle nipple but shaped like a sippy. Ergonomically the cup helps them understand how to tilt the cup.

Just keep trying. He is still a baby and will get it eventually. I personally don't like sippy cups. The ones with valves aren't any better than bottles. Straws are a really good skill to have.
