Start teaching them sign language, that way they can still communicate with you without using words. Around 8 months old is a good age to start.

some times when they are working so hard on one area of development, the others sort of get "left behind" Is she not comprehending, or not speaking? Maybe if she doesn't understand you her hearing should be checked.

i think i understand your post. my middle daughter was the same way. she was really far ahead in her motor skills and she only said 3 words. i ended up getting her speech help and taking her to the Ear nose and throat doctor. the doctor found out her ears were full of liquid and that the muscule under her tonuge was extremly tight. meaning she was not able to raise it properly to speech. she had both issuses fixed in jan. she will be two years old on thursday. well now she is speeching up a storm. she still has major problems with ending sounds of words. i hope this helps.
