my 17 month old, loves his bottles of milk, he has one in the morning (240mls) one before afternoon nap and one before going to bed, sometimes two before going to bed, is this normal, he eats solids but would rather his bottle. Has anyone else have a milkoholic!! lol

for a 17 month old that sounds perfectly fine. all babies are different. my twins are 2yrs and 3 months when they were 21 months i just gave them their milk in beakers morning and bed time. now i struggle to get them to drink milk as they only want water so i include yogurts and cheese. i wish i could get them to drink milk 3 times a day. hope this helps

My son (now 3) was the same way... too much milk. Once we got rid of the bottle (which was actually easier than we thought) he began to gain weight and eat. Now he drinks milk with his meals only.

Just make sure he eats a balanced diet. His milk intake will also depend on his size. My first son was over 97% (growth chart) so of course he is going to drink more than a smaller toddler. You know you child more than anyone and every child is different.

Quoting Crystal:

All I can say is be careful and break the habit slowly. Definitely move to a sippy cup and cut back the milk. My son had too much milk and was diagnosed as failure to thrive, because of too much milk (24-28 ozs a day). Now that we cut him back to between 16-20 ozs a day he appears to be gaining more weight and have less dirty diapers. He is 19 months old so I would say ask your Pediatrician how much milk they recommend and try to stick with that.

This is true, my neice was rushed to the hospital and had to have a blood transfusion because of her severe low iron and it was figured out it was because drank too much milk, resulting in her not eating enough....also happened to my cousins little boy, not as extreme, but has very low iron and has to take meds now.....scary i know, ive never heard of it before this....my boy is also a milk addict! but i have cut back now

Have you tried to break him from the bottle? He might be craving the comfort of sucking on a bottle but, the bottle is going to start damaging his teeth if it hasn't already. I would offer other liquids in a sippy also but, I believe getting rid of the bottle is the main thing.

he's not drinking a sippy cup? if not switch him to a sippy cup , he is more then old enough... my girls would drink milk all day if I let them, but I switch it up weather they like it or not.. they get juice, or ice water, milk is good and all but milk doesnt provide all the vitamins a growing child needs , especially if he is not eating because he would rather have his milk .. put your foot down with him.. if he is thirsty he will drink what you give him.
