In the winter we have one of those gingerbread toys that's filled with rice that you can put in the microwave. I let them hold it to keep hands and little laps warm. We only do that on long trips and we usually don't have any toys in the car. Maybe a little stuffed animal attached to the car seat at about a year old, but son is 20 months and doesn't have anything. We did get some music - or put on the oldies. They learn lyrics really fast and sing along! It's too cute.

I try to not give my child hard toys while in the car. If we're in an accident, it could become a projectile and hurt him badly, or worse. So I give him cloth books, stuffed toys, things like that. Mind you, my kid is pretty great for sleeping for a large chunk of any lengthy drive we take, so I'm a bit spoiled that way.

I would recommend any toy they can't choke on at all. The last thing you need to worry about while driving is whether or not your child is going to choke. Also as csaey recommends a DVD is great for long trips at that age. Also music tapes are great to play in the car. Sing with your little one and make it lots of fun.

Not really. When my sons were younger, I always had music tapes. There are many good songs that children can listen to. Raffi, Dr. Jean are two that I really like. Stories on tape/CD with books were popular with my boys. Aquadoodle is a nice toy for young ones. Electronic games appropriate for your children ages can be great for long trip. However, little one have very short attention spans so having a variety of music/stories/games can make it a pleasant drive.

My son has always liked electronic hand held games for the car. Leap Frog and V Tech make some great ones that are very educational. I also keep a bag of books within his reach. I play a lot of music in car and we do a lot of singing. That also keeps him entertained.

my son likes to play with little cars and trucks etc and he also likes to read books in the car, my only real advice to you is get yourself some sort of storage tub that can sit in between them and always encourage them to put the toy back in the tub instead of throwing it on the floor cause it's a pain in the butt constantly picking toys up in the car.
If your car has a cigarette lighter in the front and your thinking about going on a long trip maybe invest in one of those double screen portable dvd players we've got one for our 2 year old and it's a god send for long trips :)
