I just did this with my son...who will be 2 in a few weeks. I have a nephew, who is 8mos and I told my son that his cousin lost his "nummy" and needed his. So, we gathered up all of the nummy's, put them in a box and put them at the street for the mailman to take. After a while,we went to make sure the mailman picked them up (my husband got them and threw them out:). After that, he only asked for it twice and we told him that we sent them to his cousin...and he was OK with that. He has been fine at night, but it takes him longer than usualto get to sleep at naptime...but it is going pretty well. Good luck!

I have yet to try this, BUT - my pediatrician recommended cutting off the tips so that they still had the security of the binkie, but wouldn't get any satisfaction when sucking on it. Like I said, I haven't tried it, but it sounds like a good plan...when I'm ready. :)

I have an almost 3 year old that will need to get rid of her's too (very soon), but dreading it. With my son, it was almost too easy. After his first dentist appt (at 3yrs old), the hygenist told me I really needed to get rid of his binkie. It was just as much a crutch for me as it was for him. She suggested I use something on it that made it taste bad and suggested apple cider vinegar. Sounds bad, I know. Anyway, I dipped them into a cup of vinegar then took them out and let them dry. I had started to tell him that his binkie might start to go bad and that the Binkie Fairy would need it for other babies.
That night, after he brushed his teeth, I tucked him into bed and handed him a binkie. He immediately spit it out, I said, it must have gone bad, we'll have to leave it for the Binkie Fairy. He asked for his other one, this time he just smelled it and found that it went bad too. Never asked for one again.
I need to get rid of my daughters, but again, its my crutch too! Good luck!
