I have a 3 1/2 year old son who is very shy. He is usually ok around other people after settling in and getting to know them but I took him to the dentist for the first time and this dentist looked like a regular guy no over coat, and my son freaked out. Cried the whole time like someone was killing him. I had to help and hold him down so they could look in his mouth.

For some reason he does this with the doctor or anywhere we go. We can go a few times or many and it's always the same.

Has anyone esle gone through this or is going through it now....What is your experience and how did you handle it?

My 2 1/2 year old is fine at the dentists and doctor but my 6 year old son is not ok and he's never really been ok! We always give him notice, starting about a week out so he gets used to the idea, we don't like to surprise him because it makes it much worse. We have a really good dentist who tries to keep the experience positive when he was 3 he had to have a couple cavities filled and he was being so good she only did one because she wanted it to be a good experience. As far as the dentists goes you can practice with your little one by having them lay on the bed while you brush his teeth and look in his mouth, it makes for good practice for the real appointments. We also talk about what's going to happen before we go to the doctors. You could also buy some books on going to the doctor and dentist and read them before going.
