I think it sounds great and creative! Kids love this stuff and of course it might be messy but you can always had a plastic table cloth and their parents will be with their children keeping and eye out on them. You can even use sponges to paint with and dont know what they are called but they have the sponges on wooden sticks in the paint isle, those work great. I am working on my sons bday party and I have found most of the things I am making and doing on Pinterest. They have so many ideas and easy to do.

Well I think it sounds fun, its good to hear of others being creative with there childs party. Id tell the parents about the theme though, just to give them a heads up on maybe bringing an old t shirt for them to wear while painting. Hope it turns out well!

I usually don't tell the parents the "theme" of the party. Usually I let my son choose and then we come up with fun activities to do. You can have your party be any theme, and do the painting as a craft activity to keep the kids busy. If you do painting just let parents know ahead of time, especially based on the ages of the children that will be attending that way they can make sure the kids are dressed appropriately.
