Blankets on at night?

Any tips for how to keep your toddlers' blankets on at night? We live in Michigan and it's starting to get pretty cold at night. My twin toddlers are both super active sleepers and are constantly kicking their covers off. They are 2 1/2 now; last year they were still sleeping in sleepsacks so kicking off the covers wasn't an issue. Although they don't seem to be waking up cold, I worry about them getting cold and get up several times a night to cover them back up. Invariably, one of them is uncovered (or upside down or in the other's bed) when I go in. It seems to be more a problem of me being a worrier than them being uncomfortable; however, I would love some tips to keep them covered so I can get a better night's sleep!

You can let your children choose some nice non-skid socks just for wearing to sleep. Put on thick comfy pyjamas for them with those socks so they won't catch a chill even if they kick off their blankets.

This is really good too especially if you're training them to go potty in the middle of the night on their own (if they have a night light on where they sleep ;)

Footie pajamas. Those. Things are warm.

I dress my 18 month old in 2 sets of fleece footie pajamas - 18 month size first and then 24 month size on top. I go bigger for the top layer so it's easy to get on over the first pajama layer. This keeps him warm and cozy.

I live in australia and my toddler does the same thing. I just make sure that if it is really cold i put on extra layers of clothing. Like a vest and really think pjs.

I would put t-shirts or onesie under their pj's, and socks on their feet, then make sure they are wearing pajama sleepers or Fleece pajama sleepers. That should keep them warm enough without them having to use blankets. I found though that having a blanket with my 3 year old's favorite cartoon character on it helped! He never sleeps unless he has his Cars or Winnie the Pooh blanket on him!!!

You could also buy a small portable heater. We have one that hangs on the wall in my daughter's room because her room gets cold for some reason at night. I set it at 66, and if the temp in her room is below that, the heater comes on and keeps her room warm!

We love wearable blanket but my son just got fungus as his little feet sweat at night. I switched to wearable blanket - walker where feet are hanging out. Great

Same problem here. I thought I was alone.
layer it - OneS, PJs and WEARABLE BLANKET - check it out at target fpr example - really warm. Sleep sacks are the best for really cold days.

My son has a thicker blanket that has the bottom corners sewn up, to fit perfectly over the mattress corners. If we don't use this blanket, he kicks it off and pushes it off to his side. I don't know if he's ever woken up in the middle of the night to cover back up (he is a heat machine!!), but I feel better when using this blanket, because I am most concerned with his little feet getting cold. This way, the blanket usually still has his feet covered.

i recomend full outfits that have feet... i live in florida bit my husband keeps it between 60 and 68 degree's in the house at night and bith of my children 11 month's and 2 constantly kick their cover's off so i started putting them in the footed jammies and that seems the keep them from getting cold.

I have given up on keeping my kids blankets on. I finally just got some warm fleece footed sleepers. I don't have to worry about them getting too cold if they kick their blankets off.

Didn't read all the replies...

My son is 3. He likes to be naked. I sleep next to him at night (we put 2 full-sized mattresses on the floor next to each other to make one big family bed) and when he stirs at night I usually find him uncovered and with goosebumps, and pull the blankets over him again. I'm sure if I wasn't there to cover him again each time, when he stirs he would become fully awake and ruin the night for all of us.

We live in ohio my son is 23 months old wont keep a cover on so we put a small heater in his room and keep it about 73 to 74 degrees at night and put heavey long pj's on him. I dont put a cover on him anymore because he is to active while he sleeps so it just gets tangeled around his legs and wakes him up. good luck

When my kids were that age (in fact until my son was 4) I had them in fleece sleep suits that had legs and zipped from the bottom of one leg right up to their neck. A bit like a romper suit. They were brilliant. I got some from Target but they were heavier ones available from better stores. When they weren't in bed they acted like a dressing gown and they ran around the house in them. They have rubber pads in the feet. Here in Australia the better ones are by SnugTime.

My son does the same thing, I put him in fleece (blanket sleepers) that are footed, with onsie (undershirt) under them, it helps. Try to look for thicker ones, some can be pretty thin

We put him in fleecy one pieces - they have them at Target for up to 6 or 7 years old. With feet. And on cold nights we add an extra layer of pyjamas - sometimes even socks. They work really well.

My son seems to generate his own heat, and by the time morning rolls around, he's sleeping on top of the blankets. If he's really cold, we'll find him buried in the blankets, so I think toddlers can fend for themselves by the age of 2. We used sleep sacks last winter, but our son is 2 1/2 now. If he's cold when he goes to bed, he just asks for socks with his pyjamas.

We live in Arizona, but regardless of what people think, it CAN get cold at night. You say they're "active" sleepers? They probably get a little warm from all that movement. When you sleep you're at your most relaxed and open to sensation. Maybe they DO get warm. I think if they were cold, they'd be able to sense it, wake and cover themselves again. If it remains an issue, just put them in warmer jammies.

Try double layering the PJ's one lighter and one heavier so if they do kick off the covers they will still be warm.. but watch not too warm

I bought both of my kids child sized sleeping bags with their favorite characters on them. They will crawl into them whenever they want to or they can open them up and they are big enough to more than cover a toddler size bed. My daughter has a full size bed and open the sleeping bag will reach from one side to the other. My kids are also active sleepers they will kick out when they get warm but they cover back up when they get cool. They do it all in their sleep just like average adults do.

My daughters room tends to be the coldest in the house anway so i bought a small space heater for her room. I put her in a blanket sleeper and then just give her a blankie to cuddle with, since i know she'll be warm.

Maybe try inseparable sheets. They are sewn fully down one side and the bottom and then part way up the other side. It helps to keep everything tucked in.

We took away the heavy blankets and gave light to medium blankets. during colder weather we layered on the clothes. i.e. t-shirt, long underwear, and sleepers, etc. That way when our kids kicked off the blankets it was no big deal.

good luck and god bless

i had the same problem with my son so this is what i did. Either put him in a onesie pj with feet or put a tshirt on under his 2 piece pjs. Tuck in the tshirt inot his pants and that wya he doesnt have his back or kidneys uncovered. Socks help at night too so the toes dont get cold. hope it helps

I had the same issue with my daughter who sleeps in a full size "big girl" bed. I actually purchased a space heater, after intense research, and found that it works really well. I made sure to purchase one with an automatic shut off if it gets too hot, tip control and, other safety precautions. Good Luck!

If they get cold they'll cover themselves. My daughter is very active at night and I often find her out of the covers in the morning. However when it gets really cold, I've found her under her blankets.

Our son never wakes in the morning with his covers on like I left them the night before. I'm just sure to dress him in warm PJ's and we keep the house warm at night with the heater as well. I don't think there is anything that you can do to keep the covers on them unless you invest in some Toddler sleeping bags.

When my kids were infants I used a sleepersack, but then they grew too big for that. My mom and I created a toddler version of the infant sleepersack. ( I can give you details if you'd like-just let me know) I used it on my son until he was at least 2 plus years old, and now I put it on my 20 month old. I then still cover her up with blankets. This way at least if she rolls, she is still covered.

make the bed with the blankets sideways, not lengthways as they should be, heaps of tuck-in and more effort to kickoff.

I do the same thing -- warm fleece pajamas, sometimes with a onesie underneath if it's REALLY cold, and I put a warm blanket on top of the crib sheet, so even if he kicks off his other blanket, he has something underneath him that at least that helps retain some of his body heat.

I just put my son in warm pajamas. If they kick them off it's really all you can do. But when I go in to check on him I always cover him back up:)

My daughter is 26 months and I worried about the same thing with her. When she's cold she snuggles down or pulls her blankets back up, so I wouldn't worry too much.

If your child isn't waking up and doesn't seem bothered then in my opinion you don't have a problem. I used to be paranoid too but my daughter LOVES to be pretty much naked when she sleeps. It's already close to freezing level outside during the evenings and she prefers to sleep in thin short/tank-top pj's.....she's 26 months. Trust me, you'll know if they're cold.

We live in upstate NY and I put my 3 year old son to bed in thick, footed onesies. This way if he kicks the blanket off, he's still covered. We also use flannel sheets and pillow cases. They hold in heat a lot better and sometimes I find that he's ok with just the top sheet and not the blanket and he stays pretty warm. It's 39 degrees here right now and that's how he's sleeping right this minute :) Footed onesies and just a flannel sheet / pillow case.
