Difficult meal time

My 17 month old son has entered a mildly new phase... not eating any meals that are put in front of him. Yesterday at lunch, he lost his mind when i wouldn't let him eat ketchup for lunch! I thought that sitting him at the table in a 'big boy chair' with us would help, and it did, but only for a week or so. Now when i put a plate of food in front of him, he throws it. Some days its the whole plate that gets tossed, other days its just the food. Either way, he wont eat it. If he can't find something disgusting to eat (aka ketchup) he'll grab my plate (or the food off of it) and throw it on the floor. No amount of discipline gets through to him at meal time either, trust me I've tried. Once we're done eating, he stands at his chair screaming and crying because he wants pretzels, oranges or cheese (all he eats). How do i get him to eat other things, eat with us at the table or even keep the food on the plate? help!

I'm going through the same thing with my son. I'll just tell him that either he eats what I give him or he doesn't eat. Like Ginger said, he won't starve. The other day my son wasn't eating his sandwich good, so I put it in a sandwich bag and put it in the fridge. I brought it out for his snack and he ate it. He'll get to a point where he's hungry enough to eat what you give him and behave while you're doing it. Good Luck!

my sugestion is to ignore the protests( ya I know it is hard to handle but stay calm) he will eventually give in and eat.. If he throws the plate on the floor I would tell him next time the plate is going away( then if repeated takt the plate away) after a few time he will learn that you mean what you say and will at least attempt to eat.. he wont starve if he misses a few meals oh well( what do you have to loose, hes not eating good now)

hope it helps
