Both of my daughters have gone through Breath Holding Spells. Is this something that I am causing by my reaction to it or is it a something that they can't help. My oldest has grown out of it but I am only a year in with my baby and knowing that this could go on for years scares me to death. I hate this...

tell them if they start to do it "you know you'll just pass out and breath finally right" and then that's it dont say anything else dont do anything else just ignore them. your kids know that this scares you and thats why they do it because they know that this will get you to break. so stop breaking when they do it and they will eventually learn it doesnt get them anywhere but on the floor lol

My cousin did this all the time, would turn blue and pass out. it was a attemot to get attention or his own way. Don't be manipulated.

My Mum said I did this as a kid! I did it for attention apparently and would pass out about once a week. Her step dad who was a GP told her to put me in my room next time I did it. Which happenned to be when she had her girlfriends over for afternoon tea. She picked me up (I had fainted) and took me in my room and put me on the bed and went back to her shocked friends and had to explain!! She said I never did it again because I wasn't fussed over.
I think ther are two types of breath holding, one where it is for attention and the other where the system is shocked by injury or pain.

I haven't experienced it myself but a few of my friends have kids that do it and my younger brother used to cry hold his breath to the point where he used to faint. He grew out of it as did my friends children but it is scary however there is nothing to worry about the body is made in such a way that if you purposely hold your breath as you faint your body automatically takes over and starts to breath for you. Just stick it out, most of the children do it because it gets a reaction out of you and they know it gets to you.
