How can I get my 16 month old to stop scratching his head when upset?

When he gets upset he starts scratching his head. He does it when he's in teething pain, and he does it during temper tantrums. We stop the temper tantrums right away, and try to get his hands away from his head, but by then he has already scratched his head enough. He has really bad cradle cap, we got medicated stuff for it. His dad (my boyfriend) had the same thing, but only difference is, when my son scratches his head he gets red cuts from his nails. We trim his nails but we've noticed he will just attack his head regardless... =/

I don't think anything is wrong with lice or anything like that because his pediatrician saw him last week and looked at his scalp so we could get some medication for the cradle cap.

hhhhmmm thats a tough one....casue he could be doing it for attention, he could be doing it because his scalp hurts and he doesn't understand that scratching is causing it to hurt. and your already trimming his nails and you don't want to trim them too short cause that could cause his nails some problems. so go with some medication for his scalp and maybe put some tape on the tip of his fingures so when he does scratch the tape should be soft so it shouldn't leave scratches and if that don't work just keep asking the predication what can be done to help with the scratching
