How do I cut my 2 yr old son's hair when he's TERRIFIED of getting it cut?

Lisa- thanks. I'll try to introduce the clippers again to him later on when he's a little older. Maybe he'll get past the phase sooner or later...I hope :)

Nicola- I put him in his kiddie pool today and used scissors. He didn't know what I was doing and kept playing with his toys. I trimmed what I could and now he has a crooked cut on the bottom half of his hair but a least it's off his neck now..lol. It's not perfect but it'll do for now. I'll try again another day to clean it up. Good idea, thanks!

With my son he had no troubles with me cutting his hair until I wanted to use the clippers, but he is now almost 5yo. but before each haircut I remind him that clippers don't hurt, just tickle and I let him place his hand on the guard with clipper on so he can feel it. I also let him watch a show, and when he was younger I let him have a special snack.

Is he scared of scissors? For our son, we found the easiest way was to cut his hair was with scissors (the type that often come in the box with the clippers) while he was preoccupied with his toys in the bath. I had a tub of water at the side of me that I could rinse the scissors and my hands in so the hair did not go into the bath. You might at least be able to get it to a more comfortable length for him. Chelsea-Thanks. We took him to a kidscut place one time and he cried so much he threw up..I'll have my husband work on it because I've tried everything.

My son was terrified at first as well. I tried to give him first cut and it was disastrous! My parents took him to get his hair fixed and they pretty much had to hold him down :( so glad I wasn't there for that. Then we took him to the barber shop with dad and he watched dad get his hair cut. We talked to him about everything that was happening and he sat in dads lap for part of it. We took him to a kids cuts place right after and he got to sit in a Thomas the train seat and he sat still through the whole thing! I would definitely try taking him with dad or another adult male that he is close to so he can see that it is not scary :)

Maya- My husband cuts his own hair with clippers so we were going to have my son cut my husbands hair to show him it doesn't hurt but I think he's just scared of clippers or anything touching his head. I think I might try to cut it again when he's asleep. We'll see, don't know what else to do.

Nicky- He won't even go near the clippers. Once he sees it, he runs away and starts screaming. We tried to just do it even though he was hysterical, even let him hold it, but he put up a good fight.



Vicki-Very true. I just want him to be more comfortable in the heat. I guess we'll wait until it's really unbearable for him and see if he wants it trimmed.

Why do you need to cut it? If you had a girl would you be cutting it with clippers just because the weather is hot? If he doesn't want it done then leave it until he does, it's his head after all.

put the guard on the clippers and let him make a swipe in his own hair.. then maybe he will see that its not that bad. My son used to be the same way when he was 1.. i just did it even though he was hysterical and i felt awful but it needed to be done
