How do you handle your toddler's tamtrums in public places?

My toddler throws horrible tamtrums when we go out. It seems to happen when he doesn't get his way (wants to run or grab something he's not supposed to) he doesn't listen if I tell him to stop doing something so if I try to grab him away from what he's doing (for his own safety) he proceeds to have tamtrums. He is 2 1/2 years old, I usually just grab him and run out of places in shame, but lately he's getting stronger and heavier and I need to find another way to handle it! He usually gets so upset that he throws himself on the ground,often hitting his head in the concrete, which is extremely scary for me and painful for him.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm afraid to leave the house lately.

my son went threw this and what i did was not feed into his tatrums and acted like it didnt bother me. which other parents might thing thats horrible exspecially when your out in public but it works. he does it because he wants to see your reaction. and my son did the same so every time he started doing it i just played it off like everything was normal and let him calm down on his own. while making sure he was safe. Once he realises your not going to give into his tatrums he will give up. and if you just act as if everything normal when he does throw them he will eventually give up and know its not getting him any where exspecially if you act like his tatrums are no big deal. that what i did. and it worked really well. i wish you luck. it just takes alot of patience and ignoring other people around you (if your in public)
