I always stuck with 10- 20 minutes. I gauged going in based on the different cries. Sometimes she just needed me to rub her back for a minute or two to calm her down then she'd wimper a bit and fall asleep.

I went to a sleep school when my daughter was 18 month( she's now two) and they said as long as they werent in distress that it could sometimes take an hour before they would go to sleep. I know its hard but if you can listen to her crying and as long as the a breaks in the crying and it varies in pitch they said that was fine. Someday my daughter will play for an hour in the cot before falling asleep, they are also getting to an age where somedays a sleep just isnt going to happen. So I stick to if they cry for more then 20 mins straight I'l go in and resettle her but if its just wingeing I dont. hope that is some help
