Imaginary Friend

I was wondering if anyone else has a child that has an imaginary friend. My daughter turned three in March and this past month she now has a 'friend'. She has had a big imagination, loves playing pretend. I have read that at this age kids do have an imagination and will act things out (like putting the baby to bed or in time out) and I was just wanting to make sure that this is normal. Her 'friend' has a name and everything!

What are your thoughts?

Thank you so much for sharing your son's 'friends' with me, Amanda. I feel more comfortable about my daughter's 'friend'!

My son had several imaginary friends at age 3...with hilarious names, too. Deego, Liggit, Mission, Ee-Ee. Or something like that! He would talk about them and games they played. It wasn't long before I could tell that each of his "friends" had one of his personality traits. Deego was banned from our house a few times. I even had to call his mom. He was troublesome and would do things he shouldn't. Ee-ee was soft-spoken and easy to get along with. Mission and Liggit were less central, but had their own little things, too.



I just played along. He was entertaining himself and enjoyed their "company." I think it's completely normal and fine. I had 2 imaginary friends myself. We lived in an area where there were no kids and my brothers and sisters were much older. I substituted my "friends" until kids moved in down the street from us. My son, now 4, doesn't ever really speak of his once very important friends. He has found friends in our neighborhood and doesn't need the imaginary ones anymore.



I kind of miss them...except Deego! :)
