I have to keep him up to see them, because he usually goes to bed at 8:30pm . It's not worth it if he's gonna get scared. I really want to try it. Should I cover his ears?

He loved the fireworks. He was laughing and kept putting his hands up, trying to catch them in the sky!! So cute

If your child is the frightened by loud things he may be scared, but it is always worth a try. We took our daughter before she was a year and the noise never scared her, she loved the colors, and we didn't use anything in her ears either. I think he would be fine, just be prepared to leave if he is afraid.

My son was 7 months old and he just enjoyed them. We didn't cover his ears, but we were a little further away than where they were shooting them off.

Quoting Tonda:
My son saw them at 3 months and loved them and didnt get scared. But I also know some 8 yr olds that get scared so it really depends on the kid
I agree with this. You could either cover the ears or put cotton balls gently into them.

We did fireworks when our son was about that young but we stayed inside watching from the window and my husband let them off. He loved it and wasnt scared. Maybe you could try that to see what his reaction is.
