I've been constantly harassed by my family telling me my 16 month old daughter is too skinny/unhealthy! I'm at my wits end as to what I can do. She used to routinely eat her breakfast and lunch, and dinner is such an issue! I try feeding her all sorts of different foods but she just doesn't eat her dinner. I've cut basically all snacks to see if that would help her appetite at dinner but it's not and now she just gets less food during the day. Recently she takes food into her mouth and just lets it sit in there not swallowing it. Oh and I tried giving her chocolate Pediasure and she hates it! My daughter weighs 22 pounds and 10 ounces. I guess my question is, what am I to do? Is she unhealthy?

I agree take her to the doc if you are really concerned. My daughter is almost 3 and only weighs 3 pounds more then your daughter now. She is tiny and we have been through alot of feeding issues with her and the one thing I have learned is that quality is more important then quanity. So if she will only have three bites make them fresh fruit or a yogurt opposed to biscuits or crackers. Kids dont work the same as us, they have small bellies so have to eat more regular or they will lose there appetite. My daughter will still have days that she will sit and eat meals good then other days she grazes more so through the day in small bits opposed to big sittings. If you know she will eat a good breakfast and lunch and not so good of dinner then give her veggies at lunch and a sandwhich for dinner. Offer lots of fresh fruit and veggies, dairy products, multigrain breads, meats and other protiens, low gi snacks. Try to avoid sugars and junk foods as all these do is fill them with empty calories and give them a sugar rush that they come down from hard. As hard as it is try to relax at meal times too cause they can feel your stress, sit and eat with her and have chats with her about the things on her plate, make it fun and let her see you eating the same things because she will want to copy you. If you get the all clear from the doc then just tell your family that she is a small girl who will eat 7 smaller meals a day then 3 big ones. I can tell you from having a 15 month battle and living in clinics with our daughter that they do turn around but it takes time. Hang in there and dont let other peoples options get to you too much!!!!

If you are truly worried take her to your pediatrician talk to them about your concerns and let them be the judge as to whether or not this is a health issue. I used to think my son was too skinny still do and he is now 11 however according to his dr. he is healthy and happy and growing well so I let it go. The doctor is the only one who can truly tell you if there is a health issue.
