if you're taking the sippy cup away right after he has a drink you won't need to break him of it later the only reason you will need to break him of it is if you are leaving the sippy cup in bed with him because you will eventually want to take the sippy cup away all together.

I'd say it's pretty normal actually. If he needs a drink and goes back to sleep after he gets one, by all means - give the kid a drink. I don't know why you'd need to break him of this later.

water is just fine to give them in bed it wont hurt his teeth. The only concern is if you are leaving it with him its just another habit you are going to have to break later on. My daughter is 18 months and still doesn't sleep through the night either. My younger sister didn't sleep through the night until she was 4. Some kids just aren't big sleepers. If you wanted to try a crying it out method or something but are worried about your neighbors maybe you could go and speak with them before you start to try and give them a heads up.

I would think that if he goes back to sleep after a drink of water he is just thirsty. It might be dryer in your apt for him and he needs a little more to drink. My kids sometimes get up for a drink, a couple of sips and they are right back to sleep. You said that you know you should not give him the sippie, but you drink when you are thirsty so he should get to too. :) I know it will all work out for you. :)
