Does anyone have any suggestions on how to encourage my little guy to start using real words? He's 13 months and can say 'mama' and 'dada', and he understands so much of what we are saying. But he doesn't try to use real words. He babbles a lot, but nothing close to a real word.

flash cards worked with my 2 you can get them from early learning centre, Finding items in a book and then getting him to say them after you is a good idea. (storybook, magazine, newpaper).

So My children are very close in age, but developed very differently. My daughter was VERY verbal and we speaking full sentences at 12 months old! The doctors were shocked at how well her speech was and what a vast vocabulary she had. Then my son was so different. He walked by 8 months old and physically did things way earlier than she did, but didn't start saying words until he was 16 months old. Once he did he caught on fast. My daughter will be 5 next month and my son 4 in Nov. I find that she still has an amazing vocabulary and he is more focused on physical performance. He is just as smart as her, it's just that communicating is not as important to him as it is to her. Funny how two kids from the same family develop in such a different way, but they do. Every kid does. I think we are all so caught up in making milestones that sometimes we worry when we shouldn't.

his still pretty young give him time my 20 month old is still leanring to new words n babble smost of the time in sentences but u cnt understand a word his says
