My son sits in the bathtub and pulls on his penis. There really isn't any need to discourage it. Your child needs to know from an early age that it's NOT an unhealthy urge. Just let him go about his business. It's all a learning experience for them in the end.

blood needs to flow in and out regularly to keep the tissue healty, no different than in any other part of the body.

Erections are perfectly normal in boys of all ages. When they're young, it isn't about a sexual response more than an excitedness and so the penis fills up with blood. Toddlers often masturbate, but not in the way that a grown man does. Does it feel good to them? Yes, but it's not the same, still.

Wow you mothers are all very weird have you ever thought that maybe there's sexual abuse going on?! I have a son and yeah he got a few erections here and there but he never once materbated or hump anything and i know other moms with boys we would never encourage masterbation that's so disgusting and perverted.

Thanks all so much for this. I have been a little bit worried that my 18months old son seems to play with his a lot and gets erection too. was a lil bit confused and had been trying to discourage him. But i'm relieved now and will leave him alone and stop making a big deal off it.

Erections are normal at any age.

I first noticed shortly after bringing my son home from the hospital during diaper changes and now, at 4.5 yrs old, he sometimes gets them in the morning.

At least you know he's a healthily male child and that his body is functioning properly.

It was a little awkward the first time my son got an erection when I was cleaning his penis. I thought I did something to make it that way! Ha! But now I see it happen all the time by itself. You pretty much get used to it being normal. It still takes me off guard when he starts playing with it recently. And now I notice him sorta hump on his diaper sometimes when he lays on his stomach. I think it's all normal, but it's funny how males are like that from birth! Ha!

It is indeed quite normal, as others have stated. You'll notice it will subside somewhat and the, once they hit their teens (like my 13 and 14 year old boys) pick back up with a vengeance! Lol! ;) All normal though...don't worry.

Catherine, when I read about the stuffed monkey, it sure did bring back memories!! My (now 13 year old) son had this poor stuffed Dalmation he did the same thing with. I think it began as a soothing thing, but soon we noticed the heavy breathing that went with it! When he was old enough to understand, I told him that he couldn't do that in the living room. If he wanted to do that he had to go to his room! He eventually grew out of it when he was 3 or 4.

my son is 2 and he has been havin them since he was about 4 months old. it is completely normal and the best thing 2 do is 2 just ignore it. If ur son thinks ur making a deal out of it, he may become confused and the same wen he plays with it. i just laugh wen ethan plays with his and tell him if he keeps playin with it it'll fall off lol.

My son is 3 and I still see several a day, like Miriam said, can be an indicator that he needs to pee. Dont worry too much, is very normal, every mum I know that has boys has seen it and although it can freak you out, is nothing to worry about. There is a condition called priaprism where the erection does not go away, if you are concerned about the frequency or duration, then see your local doctor. Hope this helps xxx

Hi.

I have a 23month old boy and he used to get them all the time. As soon as we took off the nappy basically from about 5months old. He doesn't get them as much now but still has about one a day.

For us, we knew it was a sign that he was going to pee.
