New Car Seat Law - Rear facing only COMING SOON?

Natalie - posted on 04/11/2011 ( 3 moms have responded )

the new national car seat law will be coming into place sometime soon and it is going to state that children are to remain facing backwards until the age of 2. He advised me to keep my child facing backward as long as possible. Does anyone have more input on this??

I don't think it will be an age..rather a weight, age or height ..that way if you have a child who is especially small or larger you aren't stuck trying to fit them.

Also...The study shows that a one year old's neck is not strong enough to take the whiplash from and accident, so they are recommending rear facing car seats. The direction of force on the neck and the distribution of forces to a larger area is determined by the direction of the accident and the direction of the car seat. You can control only one of those two as you have no idea what direction your next accident is going to come from.

Becky..having him rear facing will protect the child against the most common type of accident.. head on.

If you have a side impact or rear are SOL.

Just because the child is up to the age/weight requirement doesn't mean you need to turn them around. It doesn't hurt the child to leave them rear facing, better safe then sorry. I changed my son right after his 1st birthday and I wasn't thinking about what could happen if we got into an accident and with my 6 month old I'm going to be leaving him rear facing a lot long then my older son.
