my son who will be two in aug is taking things and hitting my 8 month old daughter with it! i have tried to punish him by taking away his toys and putting him in time out and nothing i do works

good luck on anything you try, my 28mth old has just discovered if he kickes the dog she runs and then its chasey... unfortunatly he tries it with dad n i as well but we dont run straight to the hallway and explain why he there but it just doesnt sink in :(
i like the idea of giving him something he can take the frustration out on but we dont always have seomthing with us when it happens....

I have a similar ages gap between my youngest and I find my 19 month old son gets jealous a lot no matter how much time I spend with him, it's hard to entertain both at once as my daughter is only 14 weeks but he starts getting violent towards me when I give her any attention. With the ages of yours u may be able to get ur son playing with his lil sis, supervised of course, and that may help as ur teaching him how to play with her and that he has to be nice and gentle. I could be completely wrong and it may not be jealousy, and I'm not implying ur neglecting either child, it's damn hard with kids so close in age and even the tinyest things we don't even notice can be the cause. If u have family or friends that can sit and watch what happens before he gets like that u might be able stop it before it happens, fresh eyes r always good :) hope u get the right help soon, good luck :)

When he is in the hitting "mood" you could try giving him a toy, or other age appropriate object, that he can hit. Then say something like "we don't hit people, but you can hit this". Things such as a wooden block and a toy hammer, or a pan and wooden spoons may do the trick.
