Potty training 2 1/2 year old boy...only interested now and then.....

Hi Laura. I am having the same problem with my son (2 1/2). I find it extremely hard to be patient with the potty training. But I figure we as mothers(parents) need to just be consistent and encouraging. My son has recently responded well to a routine. He knows that at certain times in the day he has to at least sit on the potty, and he won't scream NO. Have you found any new advice since your post?

With my son, (now 3, then 2 1/2), I used the Potty video that came with a box of Pull-Ups I bought. It is done by Huggies. It had a little video/commercial for a hand soap that was an animal head and flashed for 20 sec to let kids know how long to scrub their hands. He loved the soap and always wanted to wash his hands. I only let him wash his hands if he had gone to the bathroom.

hi there,i would say that every child is different,my 3 yr old started at the age of 2 1/2,but we just left the potty out so he got used to seeing it,and felt comfortable around it,it will just be a matter of timewhen he does use the potty,lots of praise so he feels good bout wot hes done,he will like that feeling,and probably want to carry on with it,good luck,keep us posted.x

I have had some of the same issues with my son. I asked his doctor about it. The doctor said that it is very common for boys to take a little longer to be ready. He said that sometimes boys can go to even 3 before they are mentally ready for the challenge. We started at 2 1/2, and he definately was not ready. But as he got closer to 3, it was not as much of a challenge. We are still working with him, but he is doing much better with it now.
